I have read many posts on this forum relating to turbo fart. I have a problem with turbo fart and higher than normal egt's but it is only intermittently. I may go several days without any issues and all of a sudden, the turbo fart and high egt's occur at relatively low throttle. I shut it off and it may still be a problem or not. It tends to occur only every now and then. Does the VGT actuator need cleaning? If so, where is it and how do I clean it? I am not sure where it is or what it looks like.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Turbo fart isn't exactly indicative of sticking vains or anything like that. If you are stomping on the go peddle(which depending on the situation may result in EGTs going higher) and then you all of a sudden let off, you'll get a fart.
Give me a 6.0 with a turbo that is known to be clean right then and there and I can make it happen.
Now I am not saying that the something may or may not need cleaning, I just think you are looking for a connection that really isn't there.
I appreciate your response and I understand about cutting the throttle quickly when heavily accelerating. But as I stated in my post, it does it sometimes at relatively low throttle and when this happens, the egt's are higher than normal. I would still like to know more about the vgt actuator or is it solenoid?

It's solonoid, at least as far as I know.
If you are getting high EGTs at low throttle, what about lag? Does it really feel laggy or smoking a lot? I would lean toward the vains in that case.
The actuator is right on the front of the turbo with wires going into it. It controls the vanes through oil pressure, and I don't know if you could clean it. I don't know if they stick, but the vanes sure do. That's what these guys are trying to tell you I think. You can clean the turbo yourself, there's a pictorial in the tech section sticky at the top of the forum
do not attempt to clean the accuator. you screw it up. the issue in inside the turbo or the vgt accuator is just plain failed. imo if you are getting boost odds are you vgt is ok and the turbo is binding.
Thanks for the information. Since it is only doing it occasionally, is there something other than removing the turbo and cleaning it I can try? I am not handy enough I don't think to clean one and would rather not bear the expense of a diesel mechanic. Not to say they are worth what they get but these are hard times.
to answer your question.........late of course...yes you can clean the actuator...I have cleaned mine twice. If a novice backyard mechanic can do it, so can you.
unplug the wire
take out the 8mm bolt holding on the clamp/actuator
twist/turn/pull on the actuator....
carefully take it out straight....its about 3 inches long
inspect the o rings
use carb cleaner to clean it....spray it everwhere, inside and out.
push in the end with your finger/thumb.....spray inside again....everywhere.
I have taken my turbo out in the past and cleaned it to fix the same loss of power/ vein sticking problem.....and at the same time cleaned the actuator, cleaned the oil return line from the exhaust...oh and checked the turbo intake pipes for cracks etc.
I hadnt had a problem until recently....because i dont use the truck very much, and I have a loss of power again. I thought I would try the easy cheap route first and check the actuator. I thought if it was sticking or not working correctly.....that may be the problem. Guess what, it worked....about 1 hour of work...and a 5 $ can of carb cleaner and it's back working top notch.
