My old VW bus never got stuck, even if it was miserable to drive due to the lack of cabin heat. It did have snow tires. I would be waved thru chain checkpoints along with the 4x4's.
Somehow, rear engine RWD does better than front engine FWD in snow, particularly on grades because of the weight shift to the rear when going uphill. Many FWD vehicles have trouble making it up my street in winter unless they chain up.
