We need to back up as second. There is no "Crush Nut". There is a "Pinion Nut" and there is a "Crush Sleeve" Two totally different things. Any place that deals in drive train parts should have both.

I replaced just the seal in the rear, and all I did was put the nut back on the exact number of turns and position as it come off. Count the threads before removal. Not that it's necessary, but then I tightened just hair more. Doing this should be fine as long as the locking part of it is still tight on the threads. If not I'm assuming you could use a punch or something to deform the nut a bit so it would be nice and tight going on. If a person were to tear into the diff with new gears and bearings then just get a new nut and you definitely need a new crush sleeve. Never back off of the nut on a diff with a crush sleeve. If you get it too tight and the bearings bind, you need to start over with another crush sleeve.

Midwest D., if the nut came off easy, it should go right back on. I'm not understanding how that could be.

Yeah.. It may have been a little harder to get off now that I think about it.. I cant recall exactly though. I have messed with some many nuts and bolts so far that have been may more severe to deal with, compared to this nut. I will hit Napa for a new one.. and we will see how successful it will be! LOL
