front end play

hey ya'll just wanna make sure im goin in the right direction with this, I have a 99 f150 5.4 short bed single cab 4x4. before this the newest truck i had was an 88 bronco. It has the 1 piece wheel bearing/hub assy. For the last week or so ive been hearing this weird sound from the front end that sounds almost like the tire is rubbing, I looked all around the wheel well area and found nothing, there is no wobble going down the road and it tracks strait. Just for the hell of it I jack up the front wheels and found there is a lot of play both up and down and front to back, but the ball joint and tie rods are tight, am i right in assuming the bearings are going out? I just wanna make sure before i spend the money on new ones cause they are awfully expensive. thanks

Sounds exactly like dried out hub bearings. If the truck has been through lots of water/mud, conventional grease can be washed away, at least enough to lose film strength.
