I recently aquired my grandfather's 75 F150 Ranger with a 7.5/460 4bbl. The motor has 66,000 original miles and runs great. I am a beginner when it comes to engine performance. As far as I know the motor is stock. It has dual exhaust with glasspacks. I would appreciate any advice I can get to uprade the motor's performance. I'd like to get as much horsepower as I can out of it. My goal is to make it a hot rod. Thanks!
First and cheapest upgrade is to replace the timing chain set with a pre-1972 timing chain set or an after market timing set so the 4° emissions cam timing retard will be gone. After that you can opt for a different cam, change the pistons for higher compression units, headers, etc. It will depend on how much money you want to throw at the engine.
Thanks 97puller. Like I said before I'm new at this, don't really know **** about engines; and that's why I'm hear asking for advice. Don't know all the terminology, or quite understand any of it but I figure there's only one way to learn. I'll check out the websites and study up and hit up a couple performance shops this week to try and gather some more input.
Sorry Bear if I lost your confidence right away.. As I said before, I'm a dummy when it comes to motors. But I figure there's only one way to learn. Trust me when I say I won't be touching this engine unless I know what's happening and I have one of my gear head buddies here to help me out. So at this point I guess I will just try to gain more knowledge from anyone willing to share. Thanks bud!
