Hi gang... I'm having a little problems with my Exp on the 4x4 matter and I need some help.
1995 EB Explorer, when the **** is rotated, the cluster lamp turns ok, in AUTO and in LOW, all the regular "noises" underneath are heard, going straight on 4x4? no problem... the problem comes when the 4x4 system is put under pressure:
Whenever 4x4 is engaged and I want to make a sharp turn, the truck does move, but a loud "clank, clank clank" is heard until I stop. This happens at no matter if the turn was given fast or slow... Took the truck to check it at a "cv joints" shop, thinking it was the hubs or joints but the mechanic told me that if this was true, the "clank, clank clank" would have been heard no matter if the 4x4 system was engaged or not. Again... I've pulled a loaded sorry suburban out of a muddy ditch using chains and 4x4 going straight and no problems at all. But whenever I try to climb a slope with less than 40 degrees and the steering turning, the loud "clank, clank clank" comes again... please help! who can i run to? the area I live in is mostly "plain" and no 4x4 especiallized shops are around... who would be the most appropiate? a Transmission shop?
i had a 93 ranger with 4x4. its the same set up as your explorer.mine made a loud clicking noise when it was in 4x4. when i first heard it is was only clicking every now and then. but as time when on it got worse. i when to 4wheel parts and had a guy look at it and he told me i needed new hubs. i put on new hubs and everything was great again. i dont know if thats your problem or not but if you do go and get new hubs dont get them from ford. the were gonna charge me $650 for 2 new hubs. i went back to 4 wheel parts and bought 2 warn locking hubs with install kit. the locking ones are better. it was very easy to put in also.
