I'm looking at replacing my 2008 with a 1997 4x4 5.4L with 149,000 miles, sold by a friend of mine for $1000. It's in great condition except for the Number 8 piston. Apparently, while we were on deployment, a mechanic changed the spark plugs and failed to properly install #8. Water got in and rusted the piston head, apparently straight through. My friend found the rusted parts in the bottom of the oil pan, said the rod is fine, but the head has a hole rusted through. I'm worried that the cylinder wall may be cracked. My friend says it's only needing a new piston, rings, head gasket. I'm wondering how hard this is to repair, and what my options are and how to go about it. Should I leave in the engine or pull it? Does the engine need to be replaced? Can I use a junkyard piston or would it be better to get a new one? What sort of cost am I looking at?
Finally, my backup plan is a 1986 F150 single cab in good condition for $1700. 302 with 115k, 4x2, good body and in great condition. Is that a decent price for a truck? Better than the 1997?
The 97 will need a total rebuild! The pistons are aluminum and don't rust...lol
So you need to swap in another motor or rebuild the motor with all new rings, one new piston, all new bearings ,Hone the cylinders in the block. A lot of work and money.
In this case I would ether get the older truck or just swap a low mile replacement motor in the 97.
