I've got a strange noise coming from my carb. (Holley 600 vac sec. 1850s) I'm pretty sure it's the carb and not coming from inside the engine. I don't have another carb to put on there to see if the noise goes away. It's a rattling noise. I've checked the choke horn and that's not it. Can the floats rattle? Noise seems to go away when reved. I guess I'll pull the carb off and see what I can find, but I just thought I would throw this one out there and see what ya'll thought before I get back out there and tear into it.
pvc valve???
I thought forever I had a tapping lifter till I Knocked it out of the valve cover while tryin to determin if I dared drive the truck back to wyoming...
Hey that may be a good call! My 428 had a slight tick I was concerned about from pass side and thinking about it my pcv is on that side..
I'll check this out later today after I finish swapping my deisal hydroboost Saginaw pump.
Mann I spent 3 days tearing things down and looking for the source of that tap, and new lifters (Yall would be supprised how hard it is to find parts for an FE in Oklahoma city!!!)
Still havent replaced that noisey PVC, really need to, a new one probly wouldent make sutch a racket!!!
The only time floats can rattle is if there is no gas for them to sit in. I'm guessing that it may be your accelerator pump linkage is not set correctly, or the linkage for your choke.
I guess I've never really seen a bad pcv before, until tonight. Not sure if it is what is making the noise, but it's definitely bad when compared to a new one. And it would make sense that I could hear it rat'lin through the carb. It rattled when I shook it but I could tell there wasn't full movement. It's to late to start it up tonight, but will confirm it tomorrow when I get home from work. Thanks for the tip!!!
Got home late again, but put in a new pcv and started it up. The noise seems less but still there. I'll pull the valve cover tomorrow and check to see if I have a loose rocker or possibly a tight valve. yay.
I never found out what was causing the noise but it was for sure from the carb because I bought a new carb and the noise is gone. I have other issues I'm dealing with and will update this thread when I find out what caused the noise.
