I went out to crank my truck and i turned the key over and i lost all power, this happens frequently even tho i have a new terminals i cant seem to get them tight enough...but the real problem is, i had the key off and out of the ignition and when i messed with the terminal, the truck started turning over, it didn't fire until i turned the key on but it continued to turn over after it fired. i have never had this problem before, i have a 97 f150 4.6 with about 260k on it, any help would be great thanks
Sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck, from arcing or shorting internally. I guess you could check this by disconnecting the small wires from the solenoid ( the ones on the small front terminals. NOTE disconnect the battery first). With the small wires off, if the starter activates when the battery is reconnected, the solenoid is bad. Keep everything away from the front of the engine !!
If the solenoid doesn't activate doing the above, put the small wires back on ( caution around the front of the engine again ). If the starter runs again, disconnect the battery, and find the starter relay, usually on the drivers side, top of the inner fender. Usually marked on the black cover which is which. Pull that relay, reconnect the battery. Just for a second, plug the relay back in. If the starter runs again, I'd replace the relay with one you know is good, and try it again. If the starter doesn't run as before , buy a new relay. If it still runs, the problem is likely in the key switch, like a short, or worn contacts.
Had the exact same problem 15 minutes ago, battery was dead, jumped it and it started cranking over without the key. (1998 f150 4.6) This severe storm I believe got the relays wet. Anybody have an answer? Thanks
