Can a FE oil pan be fliped around so it is a rear sump if the pick up is also re-located too?
I am thinking about the C-10 crossmember becouse it will allow me to run 15's which is my preferance, and nearly all GM's are rear sumped. This would make the installation easier since I would not have to do a extreme channel on the crossmember. I plan to section the crossmember so I can get it really low without smashing my a-arms into the ground. Its a common chebby problem, and also with out the sectioning the crossmember looks like a fat chick in a bikini. No one needs or wants to see that.
Another reason for the 15's is I already have 2 sets of decent rims in storage, and these cool race rims.
I have seen the 4x4 pans but I have to see if it would be to deep for my plans. The ones I have seen have a 8 inch deep sump, and I thinking that may be cutting it really to close.
If there's room, have you considered a 1/4 turn locking oil pan drain valve?
I use one like this on my boat with great success:
Try doing a Google Image search using Oil Pan Drain Valve.
That appears to be a Fumoto drain valve. I have one on my diesel truck and they are great. No more stripped threads or tools needed. You also have some control over the drain since my truck holds 15 qts.
Yes, the name Fumoto rings a bell. I originally bought mine from Summit, but a quick look a little while ago didn't show them as still having it. No doubt they are still available somewhere.
Certain cars used rear-sump pans too, didn't they?
Not for the FE.
Nearly all 60's and prior US model cars Ford used a rear steer set-up, and this meant front sumps. In the 70's when theu went to framed cars with front steer theyhad rear sumps, but not for the FE.
I will just have to figure this out when I have parts in my driveway to measure.
I am unemployed, and I got the time to relentlessly research parts.
I am looking at the 4x4 pan, but I wanna make sure it will not hang below my frame when I do my front suspension this summer. Also since they are 8 qt pans I may also take an couple of inchs out of the pan to do what I want, and that should leave me 5-6 quart capacity.
I also plan to swap in a C6 at the same time, and I am pretty sure I can raise the whole motor/tranny assembly up a an inch or so based off junkyard observations.
I want to ride extremely low when I am done, and leave some possibilty of lay-ing it out if I ever have enough money for that. So I wanna modify everything at once so I don't have to go over it too much again. Plus I live where there are plenty of dips and bumps so I need everything tucked up as much as possible to avoid contact with the road.
