Do you guys have any reccomendations for a cheap tonneu cover? My dealer wants to charge me over $400. I had a fabric one on my old S10 (once upon a time) that snapped over a couple of ribs. I'd like to get something like that again for the mean time. I'll need to save up some $$ after I get my next truck and won't be able to get a cap for a few months but I still need to haul my gear under cover. Are there any decent inexpensive options?
Yep I made it out alright. Now the only thing missing to normalcy is my super duty I found out today the head guy handling my claim had an emergency of his own so that explains my S-L-O-W response from them. Oh well, they're paying for my rental truck and it gives me more time to look for a deal on a 2011 and get more $$. So I can live with the rental and the time delay.
Yep, those are about what I'm looking for.
Hows that roll-up tonneu work? I have a buddy that has a fold-up cover like that and he loves it.
For any of those that have the rib-style covers - have you had any luck getting them snapped back over in the winter time? Does it require removing the ribs then re-installing them once the cover is snapped back over? Its been too many years since I had mine I forget how it worked.
the roll up one i have is great, velcro on the sides and two clips in the back (tailgate) that the cover snap into. It has 3 ribs attached to the cover that roll up with it. Takes about 30 seconds to roll or unroll. also has had 2 feet of WET snow on it and its fine. its great so glad i didnt get a snap on one
First of all, glad to hear you are okay after the accident. And, good luck with the search for the new truck.
As far as the tonneau cover, I went with the Extang, Full Tilt model. Having had a snap-on, roll-up version on my previous truck and not having much luck snapping it back on in the winter here in CT, I decided to go with the tilt model on my new truck. Not the most expensive tilt model out there by any means, but has served me very well. I like the fact the it is a soft cover and allows me to roll it if needed, but in the summer when I tow the 5th wheel, I simply take the whole cover off as one piece by myself and put it in the garage. In the winter I can "tilt" it and put the skis in/out without crawling in the bed.
I guess inexpensive is a relative term - I paid ~$325 a year ago. Very happy.
i put a lund on my f350 for the winter..... peal and seal , no snaps.....kinda like a hook and gasket closure......actually works well.....rolls up , and was only 200$.....looks sharp too... kept me from shoveling 7feet of snow we have had in boston this winter.......not looking to break the bank this is the 1 to go with......
Check a local wrecking yard. Its not very common but they do have tonneau's and canopy's sometimes. I got an almost brand new undercover brand tonneau for fifty bucks because it had a bent mounting bracket.
It sounds like you want to get something nicer down the line, but want a cheap cover now. That seems like a waste of money when you can get one for nothing down and interest free payments for a few months. I bought an Extang Solid Fold from Amazon and signed up for their card, and it's something like $28 a month and no interest if paid off in 6 months. There must be similar options other places, possibly for even more time. If I'm reading your post right, that may be a good option for you.
I am going to get another mid-height cap. I did the 0% the last time, I still had about $300 down. I just don't want to get in to that again, at least not as much as I financed the last time. If I could get about half or more down that would be ideal. It would be that much less per month I'd have hanging over my truck payment (and everything else).
The tonneu also is another cover option. If I am hauling a lot of bulk stuff or materials (maulch, dirt, etc) I can take the cap off and put the tonneu back on.
Those tilting tonneu covers look ideal. That would give me the functionality of the fiberglass one I had on my second to last truck with the weight and ease of removal/roll-up as the soft tonneu on my S10. The only thing I don't like, but I'll just have to deal with, is the lack of security. At least you can't see through it like the windows on my last truck cap
I installed the Truxedo-TruXport Roll Up Tonneau Cover on my F350 and so far am happy with it. I like how it rolls up for easy bed access and out for security and protection. It seems to seal up fine. The locking mechanism works well, also. Got it online for $250 and change plus free shipping during Christmas sales online. Not sure how much it costs now.
Keep in mind that Bakflip and other hard covers can save you up to 2 mpg (roughly 10%)..which means depending on how much you drive...the cover pays for itself.
Check out the recent facebook thread on the Bakflip fan page wall (BakFlip Tonneau Covers | Facebook) where a number of Bakflip owners shared MPG stats they kept before and after the Bakflip.
