i have a 04 explorer with teh 4.0,is there any aftermarket headers for it?i made my own catback for it with a magnaflow muffler and it sounds great and runs better also.doesnt sound like these fart can imports either.i just want to try and get more mpg out of it.right now im getting 19 on teh freeway which isnt bad but cant hurt to get more
Headers won't help much on gas mileage. To get the most out of gas mileage, you need to improve the combustion process, which its really hard to improve on that. The biggest bang for the buck on economy will be a tuner, followed by an e-fan, which would need to be a 3300 CFM or greater fan. The e-fan will give the most gains if you do a lot of highway driving or cold weather driving, where it doesn't have to turn on very often. When it is on, it indirectly loads the engine by increasing the load on the alternator.

Take your pick, Superchips, Bama, Hypertech, Diablosport. Most off the shelf tunes are far from perfect in most cases, if possible, find someone who has experience with your vehicle. Some can build a tune based on the modifications you have. If there is a local performance shop, they might be able to adjust the tune for your car, but thats a lot of expense. Doing this just to gain fuel economy is actually a backwards step, it will take a long time and a lot of driving for the tuner to pay for itself. Gas is just a couple dollars per gallon, tuners cost hundreds of dollars.
In my opinion, if gas mileage is important to you, buy a smaller more fuel efficient vehicle.
