Hey guys,
I am looking into swapping a manual transmission into my truck in fear that my E40D will go any day now. I know in 95 they only had the 5 speed and ford started putting the 6 speed in there trucks in 99. Can I put the 6 speed in my truck, or should I just go with the 5 speed? And which ever one I end up using, how hard is it going to be to do the swap. Thanks
p.s. What are the model numbers from the 5 and 6 speed manual?
The 6speed is a larger transmission. You will need to make room for it if you do decide to go that route. Do a search on this site, Many of the members have done auto to manual swaps and there are a couple write ups. I will search for the 6speed write up...
You are going to be looking for a ZF S5 or ZF S6. The 5 is a direct bolt in and go(obviously using the other parts that make it a manual). the 6 speed requires some modification of your floorpan and driveshafts to account for the larger sizing. Neither one are too terribly hard especially the 5 but the 6 requires some skills and know how to pull off.
Not sure what it is rated for. Torque is either 420 ft lbs or 470 ft lbs depending on which year. BUT they can handle loads more with a good clutch. There are guys doing crazy stuff and blowing the specs out of the water with good clutches.
