Clutch or Tranny problem?

Hi All,

Just bought a 2000 F350 V10 w/ 166k miles. Got a good deal, but the truck grinds into 2nd and 3rd unless you shift real slow. Have not tried double clutching yet. Think it maybe the syncro's but the clutch makes a bit of a squeak when the pedal is pressed. Fluid level is ok. The P.O. says he replaced the clutch before and the sticker over the shift **** shows a screw so it does seem like it may have been replaced.

As a side note, I need to find out what model this tranny is. I used to have the 6 speed in my diesel and thought about swapping if possible, but then remembered shifting that truck was shifting a '70's era truck. Slow and rough.

Brilliant. This is not an 18 wheeler. I do use the clutch.

Sounds like synchro problems to me. If it were a clutch problem you would have trouble getting the trans into first gear or reverse when sitting at a stop. If you plan on rebuilding careful how much you grind the gears. A simple synchro replacement can turn into a synchros, hub and sliders, and possibly gears themselves if you prolong it and keep grinding away.

sounds like synchros to me as well. mine would grind going into second if accellerating hard. and always shifting down into 3rd and 2nd. couldn't stop it from grinding on the downshift into 2nd. but if i shifted really slow i could prevent the upshift grind and the 3rd grind most of the time. i found it cheaper to replace the tranny than to have mine fixed. might not be the same for you. (mechanic had dropped mine and broke the casing. synchro problem followed the fall).

Kinda what I thought. I though I read hear some where that they have heavy duty syncros for a rebuild? Is this common to the 5 speeds, cause I never heard anything bad about the 6 speeds.

If it's happening in two different gears, I wouldn't say "synchros" right away.

Maybe the weight of the oil in the tranny might be too heavy.

You might have a warped pressure/clutch plate or something else keeping the tranny input shaft spinning for a while AFTER pushing on the clutch pedal.

You bring up a good point. Chew on this.. Tonight I went to start it in -10 degree weather. I put the tranny in neutral and started it. Fired up just fine, but when I went to let the clutch out it dropped the RPMs like it was in gear, almost to the point it wanted to stall. I moved the shifter back and forth to make sure it was in neutral several times to make sure. I gave it some gas and time and eventually simmered down. Not sure if the weather played a part seems how I just bought it, but if the clutch plate was off a bit would it drag the engine down like that?

I've got a 99 350 with the V-10 and 430 rear. My tranny has gotten cranky when shifting between 2nd and 3rd either way - sometimes (rarely) it grinds, other times just difficult. Had a mechanic check it and his opinion, along with almost universal agreement from several other gear heads, was to run 'er til she drops. Said it may be soon, or may be never. Real definitive, huh?

A friend had a new clutch pit in a while back had a similar issue also made a squeeling noise when idling. Turned out someone put the clutch in with too many shims. Any idea how old the clutch is

If the new trucks are the same yet the manual trans takes atf fluid. I did however forget to ask if this grinding was happening when the truck was cold or all the time? It is normal to get a little rip into gears within the first few miles when a vehicle is cold. When I say cold I mean freezing temps like 20F or colder. Our 95 that has 300K miles on it does this on cold mornings.

If the flywheel was warped of there was pressure plate problems it would be hard to get the truck in first gear or reverse at a stop like I mentioned. If a flywheel is warped pretty much any transmission in any vehicle will grind going into reverse.

Trying reverse is a good catch

Something was said about using a diesel tranny. Thought I heard that due to the torque differences between gas vs. diesel, the gearing ratios were different.....

it has done it below and above freezing, and only in 2nd and 3rd. It drags down the RPM's at first start, and never again when in neutral. it makes sense that wrong oil could slow it down and drag - just odd in two gears tho...

Do the 5 speed and 6 speed gas tranny swap without a hitch? a guy on craigslist has a 6 speed.

Is the clutch completely disengaging from the flywheel.. Perhaps a little adjustment to make sure the clutch is not dragging on the flywheel when the pedal in all the way down.
