Cam selection

74 390, would a cam with 514 lift on intake and exhaust, with 223 duration at 50 be ok to use? Truck has power brakes and vacum operated AC controls. I have never understood these numbers, i just want it to have a lope at idle. Thank you.

Hey, I used one of comp cams extreme energy cams in a 390 i built. Comp called it XE262H, it was a great running cam with a noticeable idle (but not real rough). The lift was .513 on the intake and .520 on the exhaust (to compensate for smaller exhaust valve). The duration @ .050" was 218 intake, and .224 exhaust. If you go to comp cams web site and select the fe engines (don't worry about the grind), they have a decription of how the cams run and idle. I reccomend checking it out, Great web site!

I would consider that cam about a step and a half over stock. It will wake the engine up a little, the lobe seperation angle will give an idea of what kind of idle to expect. Especially with those small duration numbers. Lift doesn't matter.

109-110 is choppy
111-112 is moderate
113-115 is mild

The lob seperation on this particular cam was 110 degrees.
