Hi, i need some help! i've got an 86 e150 with automatic overdrive that wont shift out of low gear. so i figured ok change the filter and the fluid. in the pan i found little chunks and grindings what appear to be needle bearings (about 2 tablespoons worth) i changed everything anyway and after warming up it actually shifted for about a week of running back and forth to work. then it started the same thing again.ok so maybe its shot.
i found what looks to be the same thing in the u-pull-it junk yard. is this a good idea and how do i check it out to be sure its the same. the pan is clean but its an 87 e150 will it work.

your feedback and advice is greatly appreciated,

thankyou, albesure

You probably ought to ask a moderator to move this thread to the transmission forum - there are gurus there that can answer your questions.

I recently rebuilt the AOD transmission in my 93 F-150. So far as I know, all AOD's are all the same externally as far as bellhousing bolt pattern and shift/TV cable hookups. But there may be differences in the speedometer between the 80's and 90's units-my '93 AOD does not have a speedometer pinion in it; a special toothed ring in the rear axle provides information for the speedometer and ABS system.

If you intend on keeping your 86 van for a while, I would try and find an AOD out of a 92 or 93 van (93 is the last year Ford put the AOD in trucks and vans). These later model AOD's have internal improvements and upgrades and are better units than those built in the 80's. But if your 86 AOD has a speedometer pinion in it, you will have to stay with that type of AOD.

thanks rprice and steve83. all aod's of that vintage are all the same. however after three trips to the automotive dismantling and recycling center i finally got a good one. on the final one i got the process down to 45 min. out and 1 hr & 25 min. in . thats gotta be some kind of record for a carpenter weekending as a mechanic. now i JUST have to figure out how to adjust it ( the cable) so it doesn't shift so hard.

THANK YOU AGAIN......................albesure
