OT: If you could do it again

Hey guys and gals.

Hindsight is 20/20. knowing what you know now, and about fluctuations in the economy, what would your career choice be.

would you have done something different? or would you have done the same?

looking for some direction in life! I am in telecommunications construction, and work in my town is SLOW, so I figured it might be interesting to find this out.

thanks!

not too sure about career, went to college for two years while working at a diesel shop, quit college to become full time mechanic, a couple years later went back to school for computer programming, after struggling to find work went back to mechanicing. i would either go back and do no schooling at all and saved a ton of money or tried to finish it and at least have a piece of paper. but i enjoy what i do so i cant complain too much. it would be nice to make the kind of money a dentist makes.

Yea I would have done something different. 16 years as a granite fabricator has seriously teken its toll on me physically. Guess everything happens for a reason though. Through that I've met a lot of people around the country, thus putting me in my current position as an aggragator. Making more money than I ever have.

I put myself through college, got a Master's degree, and I work for a government entity. Considering what it cost me in loans to put myself through college, and that I'll be paying on them for most of my adult life, I think I would have been better off getting a "down in the dirt" type job and making an honest living and name for myself through hard work. Right now even the gov't is having a hard time coming up with money and we are facing a possible mandatory furlough this year. Times are tough for everyone it seems.

I would have done the same. My life is the sum of my experiences so I wouldn't change a thing.

Good luck to you with whatever you decide.

I think it would have been fun to be a pilot. I started, but never finished. Oh well.

I have my college degree and my own company demolishing powerplants. I can see what your saying. But the toll that demo work has done to my body at 26 makes me question if a desk job woulda been a better choice. I could go work for alot of companies and work a 9 to 5 but there is something amazing about running your own business. I may work 80 hours a week at times but the payoff of growing and molding your own business makes it worth it.

Me too.
I'm not a gynecologist, but I'll take a look....

On a serious note, I either would have stayed in the Navy and retired, or retired from the Coast guard....This year would have been my 20th, and I could be retired right now.......

Went to college and got a degree in Economics. Could have gone on to be an Accountant, Investment Banker, etc. Got a break and got in to the computer field, started at HelpDesk and now I'm a Systems Engineer after 10 years.

I'd do the same path, but without the college degree (though it's COMPLETELY unrelated) I couldn't have gotten my current job and many others in the past. It's very silly nowadays to have that requirement, but many places still have that hangup.

So yeah, I'd do it again jobwise. As for women.... WOW would I do some things different!

I love my job. (Manager of a Therapeutic Riding Center for people with mental and physical disabilities) I started volunteering for the program 11 years ago and have been employed for 7 years now.

I am one of those people that strongly believe that everything we do in life is for a reason, and makes us who we are today. With that said there is no reason for regret, but to learn from what we have done and experienced and make choices from today forward based on our knowledge of the world and ourselves.

I love what I do and where I am in life at only 26 years old. But I am confident that I would not be here today if it weren't for the good AND bad in my past. What I do for a living is awesome and very few people get to do something as rewarding as I do. But don't be fooled by who I am today, because at the age of 14 I was on a very different road.

It sounds like to me, you (the OP) are ready for a life change, and there is nothing wrong with that. The important thing to remember is to not make decisions based on bad experiences, however make them based on where you want to end up. I didn't turn my life around because I regretted what I had done but because I knew where I wanted to be in 10 years. And here I am. i find that these statements I make are true whether you are 14 or 65.

Either way I wish you luck in trying to figure out what to do.
