narrowed rearend???

Im wanting to run some fat tires on back of the 56 and was wondering what width rearend should i use? I plan to use triangulated 4 link and tub the bed and would want a deep rim. Any ideas? Scott

If you want to stay with a 9 inch you might want to look for a 57-59 Ford passenger car rear but it would have the 5x4.5 pattern. I know they can't be easy to find anymore but the housing is the narrowest of any of the Ford nine inch rears. You may have to have a later rear end narrowed to get a custom width...

Since your going to tub and narrow... then anything goes... How much power are you going to put to the rear wheels? Is this just for looks? How tall of a tire do you want? go to http://www.hotrodhanks.com/catalog/p...10.catalog.pdf page 10 has most of the tires you want....

Im gessing 400 maybe 425 hp. 383 10:5:1 mainly for looks and cruising occasional drag race. Planning on 18s up front 20 or 22 on back maybe a 28 diameter tire. Just tryin to get width idea then i can figure backspace.

I'd stick with a nine inch with that much HP and occasional drag racing. If you're going to tub anyway, just get your tires and wheels first and then determine what width you need and have one narrowed...

Don't know alot about those size tires.... One that a friend is running is a 305/35R20

Dia 28.4"
Width 12.0"
Sidewall 4.5"

Recommended wheel is a 20x10

Hope someone else will know more then I do...

Lincoln Versailles rears are about 58.5 wide, rotor to rotor (disc rear) if you can find them...

Sorry I should have said that we've always built from the horse power to the ground, tire size, rims, and then width of rear end followed by tubing and trimming...

narrowed rear end???

Hi - Would probably be best to talk to a local drag racer. He could direct you to a machine shop in your area that specializes in narrowing rear ends. You will need to know what wheels you're going to use before you pick and narrow the rear end. Any rear end can be narrowed, but the housing needs to be cut and welded and axles need to be shortened and re-splined. Your measurements must be right, only one chance. I have seen some that have had only the long side shortened to the short axle length, thus not needing axles re -spined, but drive shaft angle could be an issue. I am no expert at this but have been involved in it a bit for drag and oval racing some time ago. Just remember you must have a good plan as to wheel bolt pattern, wheel off set ect. Of course Ford 9 inch are the most popular. Again no expert but hope this helps - Good Luck

Here's a drawing that I did when I was calculating the size and offset of my wheels. The width of the bed is not marked but it is around 49.5 inches wide. Hope this helps...

you probably wont fit a tri 4 link on the back with a wide tire not one correctly set up anyway here was pics of the way mine was when I got it. It had 15x15 rear rims with a 20" wide 31"tall tire you will definalty need a watts link to keep it all centered and with the rear being so narrow it was horrible to drive down the hwy would start swaying all over. but mine did have a panhard bar and I think the coiloveres were a tad underrated for the truck weight

I think this may be part of your problem, the shocks should have a single upper mounting bar from one side of the frame to the other. As it is now, any compression forces during shock movement will tend to deflect the top arch of the frame rails outward. These need to be tied together IMO.

I initially tried to figure out to figure out the correct rearend width and wheel/tire size and backspacing so I wouldn't have to narrow the rearend, but found it very difficult without having everything there. I ended up getting the rearend and wheels, knowing that I would need to narrow the rearend. I figured this was the only way I could get everything to fit how I wanted it.
