my 05 is all black with black bumpers and the rear bumper is rusting bad. I keep the truck out of the salt as much as possible, it only has 70k on it. My in-laws have a 05 EB with painted bumpers and only 22k on it and theirs is doing the same thing. Is it a Wisconsin thing or is this common? Bad paint? or cheap steel?
All of it! Cheap steel, fords lack of bare steel protection (backside of bumpers are not painted or coated from ford) and the salt.
POR-15 will help take care of the rust especially on the inside of the bumper.
Because we are in a ford forum and are americans people will stand up for ford and "american built" vehicles but I have been griping for years how outdated american car/truck companies are compared to imports.
Import companies put incredible efforts into rust control and make sure every possible inch of their vehicles are covered. Ford could care less about the parts you don't see when standing next to the vehicle.
American underbody, (my 03 X) see how nothing but the frame was undercoated, bolts are bare, brake lines are bare, no care what so ever.
Import underbody, my 1989 honda CRX, see how the entire underbody is undercoated, no bare bolts, brake lines are ran threw the interior of the car, and most important NO RUST on a 22 year old car!
you are correct american car companies are lazy with rust protection. although my crx rusted to the point you could see the ground pass by under your feet! I think i will sand blast the bumper and have it rhino lined, but then the little back up sensors probably wont fit.... maybe ill just paint it every 3 years
Yeah, I am going to "lubricate" the rust and underbody of the X this spring.

Yes the crx's have spots that rust because of certain reasons. One of the rust problems that I have seen with them is they came with a rubber seal on the rear wheel lips that help moister in the body seam causing rust and eventually rot that you always see at the rear corner of the rear wheel opening on hondas. Those cars are 20+ years old too, honda has gotten better every year at fending off rust. I can tell you my wifes 02 odyssey that is daily driven in salt has less rust than my 03 X that was from the south and I store in winter.
[quote] Take a look at the backside of your chrome bumpers.
Oh I know. But the painted ones seem to go every year. I have a friend that repainted his 05 bumper 3 times already. I like the Chrome look anyway. Miss the old days when Chrome was king.
yeah the problem with painted is the rock chips right in the middle of the outside will start rust. Chrome holds up to the rocks much much better. But when that rust comes threw from the back side nothing can save it, however it may be many many years away and you may have traded up way before than.
I don't mind chrome at all on the right vehicles. But I like all painted better, just looks "cleaner" to me. My 77 T-bird is covered with chrome and looks good but my 88 CRX is chromless and also looks good. If my crx was covered with chrome like the bird I think it would look horrible.
