Ok, so I found an original sales brochure for 1972 Ford F series trucks. Towards the back the only thing the brochure mentions about rear bumpers is in the "Options" section where it reads, "Rear step bumpers for Stylesides". In the picture the bumper looks like a silver painted steel bumper with diamond tread.
The proceeding paragraph reads, "...Chrome contour rear bumper for Stylesides. Painted channel rear bumper for Flaresides."
So, my question is this: Were white painted bumpers on 72 F100 Stylesides? I read somewhere in a couple places there were chromed, silver, and white bumpers but in this brochure there is only mention of chromed and a picture of the silver colored steel. (And, yes, I know that reading it somewhere on the internet does not make it Gospel truth--so I'm using the internet here to get some informed information )
When you went to the Ford dealer in 72 none of the trucks on the lot had rear bumpers. Argent, painted, chrome, step, couture were purchased from the dealer by the buyer at time of sale.
When chrome front bumpers first became standard in 1970, the optional rear contoured bumper then became chrome. Pre 1970 pickups could have had the white painted or chrome rear contoured bumper as an option. Step bumpers were either Ford manufactured or dealer installed aftermarket style. Both could come in painted or chrome. Ford manufactured rear channel type bumpers for flarsides only came painted, never chrome.
