Drove the truck around yesterday, got back in and it will not start. Just keeps cranking and cranking. Here is what I have done so far - pretty sure it is in the distributor.
Checked that it is getting fuel and it is
Checked for any loose connections to the distributor - all look good.
Checked for spark by holding one plug wire close to the block - I could not see a spark nor could I hear anything (mainly because cranking is too loud). I understand that I should be able to see a nice fat spark.
I took off the distributor cap to check and make sure that when I crank it that it turns and it does (hopefully ruling out timing chain).
My questions -
My truck has an olds 403 engine with an HEI distributor. Should I replace the entire unit or buy the separate parts and replace only the coil etc...?
My plan this morning is to make sure that the power in to the distributor is good by checking the one big wire going in for at least 12 volts - is that correct?
Yes, check that you have 12v to the coil. If you do, then check to see if your coil is working properly. Check the resitance between the positive and negative posts and it should be between .75 and 2. Then check the high tension lead and the negative post (I'm pretty sure its negative, just use whichever gives you the most resistance) you should get upwards of 10000 ohms.

Thanks and I am pretty new to this so please tell me a bit more about the coil and the high tension lead? Is the coil under the cap of the distributor and is a round barrel? and where is the high tension lead?
