has anyone had the aftermarket front wheel hub bearings go bad? I see them for about half the price of fords price and just wondering what to look out for.
any feedback much appreciated. i need to order one.
Cheap bearings are a crap shoot. You can get a good one or one that lasts 1000 miles. The absolute most important thing with any bearing is the right installation. Even a OEM bearing will crap out in few miles if installed incorrectly.
these are a complete sealed assembly and you really cant screw the installation up. it just bolts on the knuckle with 4 bolts and then the rotor and wheel goes on. just wondering if these aftermarket ones are any good. want to hear back if anyone had one fail.
I needed a new front abs sensor a little over a yr ago and ended up just getting a whole new hub instead. In fact for the cheap price ( under $100) I just went ahead and ordered 2 and replaced both. That was back in Oct 09, and 16844.1 kms ago. Yep I started a log book of all maint and gas fills when I bought the X. I also take them off I time per year and relube the needle bearings, again in Oct to ready the X for winter. I go puddle jumping in the X and have water crossings to get to a fishing hole so find the extra maint a necessary evil.
The first yr I just popped the abs sensor and pumped full of grease, and after seeing all that gu in there the last cleaning I will not be doing that again.
I have had no problems yet. I find it hard to swallow paying for even a timken unit when I can replace both for less than one price. Kinda like why I'm looking at a chineese DVD head unit instead of kenwood.
Forgot to add: make sure you get sone new mounting studs to the knuckle. You can get the part # from guzzles site. Keep the abs sensor as a spare, the new unit comes with new one. 02 and older have the coarse threads.
