i have an 86 xlt lariat 150 w/dual tanks. was a 351 fi, now a 460 carbed. it has a mechanical pump now. gauge goes to full when filled, once it starts to move after 40 or so miles, it falls to 1/8 or less and stays there. don't really know where the level it. i wonder if the electric pumps are still in there and if so, would that cause a problem? any ideas? should i change the tanks to a non fi engine?
Probably just worn sending units. If you want to replace them, then you might have to get new tanks and sending units if you want to get rid of the fuel injection stuff.
You could get the same year tanks, only get a truck with a six cylinder or a 351w. But the tanks from any of the gas trucks (except some of the 460's) 80-86 that are not fuel injected would work.
I believe your efi tanks have a larger hole in the tank, so only the efi sending units will fit. You might want to do some research on price and availability, and take your units out and see if you could buy new efi units without the pumps, and bypass the pump with a piece of hose.
Of course if your tanks are in bad shape, you could buy the new tanks and convert over, I think new tanks are around $100 apiece.
