okay, here it is, i have been looking for about four weeks now at new trucks. I have a 2006 f250 super cab, its a xlt with alot of options. I hate this truck, i live on the top of a mountian and it is terrible on gas, 10 miles is what i usually get, and it has no power at all. I do plow, and i expect the gas to be crappy then, So here is my needed help, i have been reading on here for weeks now, i drove the new 6.2 gas and the new 6.7 diesel, i have to say, that the 6.2 did not impress me much, but the diesel was a freakin monster, i loved it, but for the extra money for the engine, i really wouldnt get much better fuel mileage from what i am reading, i love the power of the 6.7, but is it worth all that extra expense? what do you guys think, i onlly tow snowmobiles and fourwheelers, so i really dont tow that much, but the 6.7 is a dream for sure. second question, is anyone out there putting in chips on these diesels yet? i never had a diesel, but here you can improve your mileage by bypassing things and puttting in chips, give me your imputs please, i am so confused, i almost bought a 6,2 gas truck last week, now im not sure what to do, i have had v10s, and a 460 ford truck too, loved them, but nothing like the new 6.7.. , and they are quiet and dont smoke, which is good for parking under the house, thanks in advance for your imputs, and , do the other older and new trucks of differnt makes get any better fuel mileage? and i almost forgot, what rear end would be better for fuel mileage? and what do you guys recomend? 311...373 ?

Reason: add too
Well, this is the 6.7L forum so responses are going to be biased on these trucks. I don't think there is one unhappy owner. I don't fret over gas mileage with these trucks. Sure, good gas mileage is a plus but I believe it is what it is with these trucks. Can't ask for passenger car mileage with a diesel truck averaging 8,000 pounds.
Do I think the 6.7L is worth the extra expense....? No, but I can be tight wad at times. People are reporting good things so far with this new motor, but the truck as a whole is still a Ford. Could be built better in some areas IMO. I was going to suggest trying a V10 but it sounds as if you've been down that road before.
You only live once and if you want something in life, you gotta pay for it. If you want the new diesel, get it....I don't think you will be disappointed.

So many questions...where does one begin...First, welcome to FTE, the place for the best information on the internet for 6.7 information. I recommend you use the search option to find the answers to all the questions you might have. I will offer a few answers for you now.
First, as you discovered there is a huge difference in power between the 6.2 gasser and the 6.7 diesel. There is a much bigger difference in fuel economy as well. If you have been looking for the last month, you have been reading mileage reports that are mainly obtained using winter blend fuel. I have had my truck since June. I have 21000 miles on it now with 8000 miles pulling 13000 pounds of fifth wheel. On summer fuel I get 18 city, 19 mixed and 21-22 highway at 70 mph no load or towing. Pulling the fiver at 65 mph I easily average 12 mpg.
Power when towing is amazing. I have been up and down the Pennsylvania hills on US 30. There are many 3 mile long 9% grades between Hershey and Pittsburgh. The truck runs up the hills just fine at 65 mph and comes down the other side at less than 50 mph with the engine brake/tow/haul mode engaged. You do not need to "chip" this engine. It gets great mileage and has 400 horsepower and 800 ft lbs of torque. It has more power than my 04 6.0 with a 100 hp tune on it. Although there are a couple of tuners out there for the 6.7, there have been few takers so far. There is plenty of oomph here and most guys like their warranty to stay in effect. $50000
trucks make you think a little.
A new 6.7 diesel will pay with your toys and their trailer. You will need the cruise control to keep from getting a bunch of speeding tickets...but it will be fun. The new diesel is proving to be very reliable. There have been no recurring issues to date. It will cost you over $7000 to get the diesel but it looks like it will be a good investment. You will get it back, most of it anyway, at resale. While you are looking around the site you will find few complaints and many happy 6.7 owners.
As Rick says think of it as an investment. I have had mine since June and have yet to tow anything big, although we are presently shopping for a travel trailer. I have been using mine as a daily driver since it only gets 2 mpg less then then our V6 Ford Minivan. The fun is driving an 8000# hot rod and watching the looks of other drivers when you effortlessly pull away from them at a light with your monster. BTW if you chip it you will loose your engine warranty according to Ford.
Here is how I look at it and justify the expense of the 6.7.
1. Oil changes are about 1/2 as often as a gasser, so the cost is about the same.
2. DEF is a non issue, not even a penny per mile in most cases.
3. Diesel fuel is more than gas but we consume fewer gallons of it in general. I think it's close enough to not really give a significant gain to either fuel in the cost/volume comparison.
4. (this is the opinion) I think the initial diesel upcharge is mainly the cost of having a truck that drives great. Here we take the financial loss but the daily experience advantage. It's not free.

I agree with all of what you just wrote, including the opinion. Although the new engine is doing extremely well, it will still take some more time and miles before it will reach the mature status that will return most of the initial investment. We, the owners of the 6.7, are confident that this will happen. There are well over 200000 of these trucks built now. There are not 25000 of them sitting on dealers lots. Some dealers have none. That makes 175000 trucks making tracks down the highways. Recurring issues have been nil. Even the small issues, mostly sensors, have been widely scattered. I am sure pleased with mine. I think I'll just go out for a ride
well, i have been debating on what truck to buy for a while now, and i after i drove both 6.2 and the 6.7, there was really no choice at all. The new diesel was amazing, and i loved it. Heres what i think at this point. I am going to wait until spring to see if any more rebates come around, I thought that maybe a used 2011 would come around at a local dealership, but from what im reading, nobody wants to get rid of these trucks. I agreee. life is short, and get what you really want, and i want one of these diesels !I dont use my truck like most of you guys do, but when im towing a boat , snowmobile trailer, fourwheeler trailer, or my 65 mustang to shows, i want power baby, so the choice is clear, diesel it is. Now, if you guys would be so kind as to help me make a decision on what rear end to get ? which one would be best for daily driving? And im glad i registered on here, will be on here alot in the next coming months reading and gathering imfo, Thanks again, Tom ps, waiting till spring also because my boss snow plow dont fit on new fords, so i will have to get another snow plow too, another 6000 dollar expense, thats what is holding me up so long, i can get a new gas with a new plow installed for the same price is not less then a new diesel with out a plow, you see where im at? but i am going to wait for the diesel, its what i want, and it should last me a long time !!!
Please do not get all twisted up in the gear ratio conundrum. For the SRW trucks it is quite simple. All trucks with 20 inch rubber get the 3.55 gears, no exceptions. The trucks with 17 or 18 inch rubber get 3.31 or 3.55 depending on options. Most owners here would agree that there is such a small, and mostly numerical, actual difference in performance that it really does not matter. There are no complainers I know of in regards to their axle ratios. Power will never be an issue.
Waiting for spring to get enhanced rebates is a roll of the dice. These trucks are selling so well that large incentives are not warranted. Also remember that these are 2011 trucks so the model year has been a long one. Even though we are nearing the anniversary of the 6.7 introduction, we still have 7 months of 2011 sales.
I have only had my truck a couple weeks now, and i have no complaints. I have 1000 miles on it and am averaging a little over 15 mpg mix city/highway with a crewcab long box and 3.31 gears. I love the truck, it does have a ton of power, and i'm sure the rest of the guys here will agree, you will smile everytime you get in that thing. It will be worht the wait!
Just got back from a 5000 K trip from Mich to the Fl Keys and back. Pulling a 35' 5th wheel. Truck averaged 12 mpg pulling the trailer driving about 62-65 mph. Non towing I get about 18 mpg. Very comfortable and quiet with no wind noise, and the performance is awesome. It will go as fast as you want with or with out the trailer!
6.7 L, 4x4 off road, Crew Cab, white
special edition Adobe Leather seats (awesome)
32 RLTS Jayco Eagle (10,600# empty)
I run the 3:31 rear on mine and have all kinds of power to pull my ~13K fiver. The power is a non-issue. As others have said, the MPG's between the two rear ends is very close, but in order to feel warm and cozy with your plow, why not get the 3:55.
Another option that you will want to consider is the new tranny comes with a PTO prep option, very reasonably priced option for those of you who plow.
everybody around here tells me not to go for the diesel, because of the fuel cost, and the oil changes and filters, and the def tank, but i have to agree with you guys, these things run like a race car, i really loved it, and i never drove a diesel truck before in my life, becasuse of the smoke and the loud noise they made, ford did it right this time with this engine, i cant help but want one, I know i dont tow like you guys do, but just to have that power under you is enough for me, im getting one, do you guys think they will offer more rebates in the spring? i have to wait because i cant afford a new plow with one right now, so hope they get better on price, and thanks alot everyone, for making up my mind, best damm truck i ever drove, beats the crap out of my 06 250 5.4, its really slow up hills
Your "everybody" who tells you about filters and DEF tanks are living in the past. The DEF issue is a non-issue, period. The implementation of DEF injection will save you money. The better performance and better fuel mileage more than offsets the less than a 1/4 cent a mile cost for the DEF. Oil filters can be had for under $20 and the fuel filters last 22500 miles. They are around $50. Oil change intervals are computer predicted and average 7500 mile or so.
