New to the 6.4, and even newer to automatics. I just bought an 08 with the Torqueshift 5 spd, and am going to change fluid/filter, as it just passed the 100K mark. No reason other than that to do it, along with the nasty things I have heard about the old 7.3 autos. To me, pretty cheap insurance.
Would anyone recommend synthetics over plain old Ford ATF? My rig is mostly a paver, towing anything from a 7K boat to a 3K contractor trailer, to occasionally a 8-9K gooseneck or pintle, but is pretty rare.
Looks pretty straightforward, but of course, I like to check with you guys first, especially being new to this particular engine.

Thanks!
I would use either the Motorcraft Mercon SP , which is what your tranny calls for or the newer Mercon LV , which I think has been backed speced to use in the SP applications. Both are really good fluids so I would not worry about trying to find something better.
Both the Mercon SP & LV can be used. Both are very good. Your owner's manual should spec the SP. The LV is a lot more $$ from what my dealer told me, so why bother w/ the LV. My 2 cents......

Bite the bullet. Take that transmission to someone who is equipped to flush it and service it properly. Without the proper equipment, you can not hope to get all the old oil to drain from an automatic transmission.
The manual specifies Mercon LV, and the service literature is very clear that the various Mercon fluids are not interchangable. I would certainly not use any fluid other than the specified LV.

Manual for what? My Superduty manual spec's Mercon SP.
