I am looking at purchasing a 2008 6.4L diesel and I am doing some research and figured I'd ask some people who really knew. I want to know expected mpg, which I know is different for different trucks? The one I am looking at has 97,000 miles on it. I'm also wondering about some potential problems? (i.e...egr, radiator, etc.) Wondering if anyone has any suggestions or info for me? I don't want to get myself into something over my head. This is my first diesel but father has had one for years. Only drives a Cummins so obviously he is trying to talk me out of this truck. Thanks
Being 3K miles away from no engine warranty I would have to have the Ford extended engine warranty on that truck before I bought it. Mileage will depend some on which body it has 2wd or 4wd and rear gears. I've gotten under 10mpg towing roughly 12Klbs and a high of 16mpg empty on the highway. The truck is settling around 12mpg right now.
If you don't get the extended warranty then I'd pull all the emissions garbage off the day it comes out of warranty assuming you don't live where you have sniffer tests. That will help the longevity of the engine and the mileage.
Get an Oasis report on it. That'll tell you its history. I also would suggest some kind of warranty since you're near the end of the factory warranty on the engine.
Cummins diesel has its problems with all the EPA junk too. My experience with Cummins has been with the larger version of the Dodge engine. But it isn't pretty. I'd take an International engine any day to a Cummins.

I am buying this truck from a chevrolet dealership. This may be a dumb question but would how would I go about getting an extended warranty from Ford (plus I have heard it is a rip-off to buy these)? Also, it is a 4wd and I will be using it as an everyday driver and work truck. I haul around 9000lbs around 3 times a week so I want to make sure this truck lasts me. And what does this warranty cost usually?

Since you're a BAMA fan as is my son, I'll offer you some advice. Sit at your computer and go through this forum for a few hours. Read up on Regeneration, DPF, EGR, Water in fuel, DPF delete, Tuners, and fuel economy. At the end of that reading assignment you should have a pretty good idea what the 6.4L is all about. Keep in mind that most guy's trucks on here are well under 100,000 miles, so compare with that in mind. You have two suggestions which are on their face at odds, "buy the extended warranty" and "tune and delete". Both are great suggestions but the second one makes the warranty void unless you do some minor scamming. By the time you do the homework on here what I just said will make more sense. I would also suggest that if you buy the truck it should be at a very attractive price. If you're in TCL that may not be a big enough market to get a good price. But I'm watching this stuff pretty closely since I've been down with some medical problems since September and I promise you dealers are having a hard time moving these trucks. Finally, I would say Ford has built a fine truck here but the 6.4L diesel and the emmision system are new stuff and as such have some challanges to them. Good luck and how bout them dawgs?
100k is a lot of miles compared to most of the experiences on here. My 08 has 52k now and it has been a great truck and I tow often. 1 new radiator, nearing the end of my second set of tires (with 20" wheels they are not cheap!), mileage pretty much as described by others in this thread. I hate the regen process but it goes with the truck. These things are really expensive to fix if you have a major problem, so to me the warranty is a good insurance policy. I would also think you would have to get a really good price before purchasing it.
The truck is $28,000. It is the king ranch edition which I know adds some price but I Kelley blue booked it and black booked it and the prices are $36,000 and $34,000 respectively. I feel like I am getting a good deal because the truck is immaculate and it carfax is clean. If I'm not getting a good deal inwoild like to know. Thanks for all the input. I checked into alot of this stuff and have read for 2 days straight. I live in Alabama and I don't think I would get caught with emissions stuff so I am thinking of doing a egr delete and possibly adding a tuner. I am 22 and this is my first big purchase so I am REALLY nervous about it but I feel like this truck is a good buy and definately the best buy I have found anywhere. Thanks for all the advice.

I bought an 08 f350 CrewCab Lariat with 69,000 miles on it. I bought an extended service plan and after all was said and done I was into it for $32,andchange. I love the truck, am going to forego the DPF Delete/Tuner until the 100,000 warranty and my extended service plan expires shortly after the 100,000 mile mark.
These trucks are going to cost you money whether its mechanically great or not. Fuel, tires, add-ons, and oil changes will easily be double the cost of a "car".
Well BAMA, I would say 28K is a good price if the mileage wasn't so high. Were you able to get an OASIS report on the truck? If you take the vin to the Ford dealer and ask one of the service advisors they may be willing to call it up for you. If you're buying from a ford dealer they should be happy to do it. If you get come back and the guys on here will help you understand it. At 22, I hope you are well employed because these trucks are expensive to drive and expensive to maintain. And, you must do the maintainence. Do not short cut that. If you don't need it to tow stuff it's really a lot of extra expense just to ride around. How would you feel if diesel got to 5 bucks a gallon cause that appears to be where it's going. But If none of that scares you, offer $23,000 and work at it and I'll bet you can buy the truck for $25,000. That's just where they seem to be selling and the HD trim is off set by the mileage. They are gonna tell you that 100,000 is not high for a diesel and that's true but with the 6.4L there just aren't enough out there with that high mileage for anyone to know. So, ask them to point you to a couple that have 100,000 on them and have sold recently. Anyway, good luck whatever you do and if you buy come on back and let us know how you make out. There is a lot of good advice on here and a few guys who really know a lot about these trucks.
