That one could be rebuilt.... they didn't give you an estimate on that?

Did they say what caused the scored cylinder?

I asked an other dealer what that would entail still in the 5000 range and the work up to them finding the problem

The cyl is scored by too much fuel dumped into the chamber. EGR failed then the injector issue.

Help

$12,000 is a tough pill to swallow, I think at that point I would be looking for a wrecked Dodge and doing the cummings swap that Zmann mentioned. Then again I know how to turn a wrench and have that as an option without dropping the coin to have another person do the work. Either way a new engine or having your current engine repaired is not going to be cheap or done today. Good luck!

So what happens a few years down the road when all states will require emission inspection. What does the inspector do when he opens the hood and instead of a V8 Powerstroke there is a 6 cylinder engine? I have no idea, but it's something to think about.

Could you do a short block and reuse everything else?

That's a $15,000 swap.

Look DYD, you can get a new long block for $4000. Or you could yank the block you have and bore/sleeve for super cheap. And I would only do that IF they're not totally full of shet. At the very least take it to a second shop for a second opinion.

the cummins swaps are legit but you have to use a same or newer year motor with all the same emissions that were mandated for that year

I just had 6k worth of work done on mine and if it was my dime I may have lit a match instead lol

check price on a short block its around 3500 reuse the the rest of whats good. as long as there is no real amount of metal transfer anyway.
if there is your in a new game. hard to give advise of what to do with an engine thats not in front of me.
you can also look at the used engine options. figure about half the cost of new.
