Gas tank relocation

I have been searching the forums, and read the post about moving the tank to the rear however in my truck thats not really a option being as I don't want to remove my custom tow hitch to do so. Did these trucks ever come with any type of fuel cell mounted under the bed on the side?

Is your truck a 2 or 4 wheel drive? If it's a 2 wheel drive, you can get an aux. tank off of a camper special. That tank fits under the bed, inside the frame, ahead of the rear axle. I don't think this would work for a 4x4, due to the transfer case. You want a tank inside the frame, not outside of it, to prevent an explosion in case of an accident. I'm going to have a tank built, to go behind the axle, but it sounds like that wouldn't work for you.

Is your hitch mounted under the frame or on the inside of the frame rails? You can find another tank similar to the mustang tank that might work I could measure my 68 chargers tank and see if that will work it looks similar to the mustang tank might be alittle long though

Here is a pic of the factory location for the aux tank in the bedside. I think the Mustang tank install has the cap access in the bedfloor.

I got these pics from another site. This is kind of what I want to do. The guy who did it had to move the rear crossmember back 5 inches, so may not work with your hitch. I have cut out a fuel door from a 79, I plan on grafting it into the side of the bed, instead of using the cap on the outside.

strap on a fuel cell that what i would do. or go with the camper special stock fuel tank that would bolt right up to your truck. its easier with a fuel cell tho i think.

Used factory aux. saddle tanks are around. The main difficulty with them is that if you have dual exhaust, the driver's side pipe will most likely have been run right through the area where the aux. tank would reside. Both my trucks are Camper Specials and have saddle tanks in addition to the main tank, and the dual exhaust issue was handled in different ways. On my '72 (now deceased and being parted out) I ran the dual exhaust myself and crossed the diver's side pipe over to the passenger side and then ran both pipes side-by-side and dumped them out just ahead of the rear wheel. On my '68, the P.O. ran the pipes under the frame rails and then down the sides of the truck between the frame and the bed, which worked pretty well.

So long as the hitch assy. is mounted to the outside of the frame rails there shouldn't be any interference with a Mustang fuel tank swap.

Its not its simply a Box iron frame that surrounds the spare tire. and sticks out beyound the tail gate by about 3 inches. I took measurements the old rear mounted tank out of the 79 f250 I have in theb ack yard for parts may very likely fit between the trailer hitch assembly although it would be a tight fit in which case when I have money ill just oder a poly replacement for the 79 and stuff it under there.
