Just bought a 03 f250 with the v10. Chose gas over diesel thinking it would be cheaper to maintain. Only gets 5-7 thousand miles/year. Looking for all pros and cons. Thanks for the input
I like mine. Had to take care of a few broken exhaust manifold studs, but they were broke when I bought it. And that made for a good excuse to buy headers. The Y-Pipe and 5 Star tune really woke it up.
Just bought a low,low mile 2004 V10 after driving a chev 3/4ton suburban with a Vortec 454 putting on 240K miles on it.
I have left the dark side and come home.
After driving it now for 3 weeks, i am scratching my head as to why i didnt do it sooner. More torque, better miliage than the chev. The best part? Its a FORD! I will never stray again!
Superdutybob, you made the right choice. I'm in the same boat running limited miles each year. For me, I decided the payback just isn't there so opted not to spend the extra $$$ for the diesel. Had diesels before, loved every one of them, did the math and decided it didn't make sense for me this time around and I don't regret the decision to try a V10.
I have a 99 250 with the V10. For the most part I love it. However, I live in Colorado and drive over the rockies a few times a year, pulling my jeep to Moab. The V10 does fine in the little foothills, but when it came time to pull the couple of steep long passes along I-70, I hate to say that I was a bit disappointed. And in the end has ultimately persuaded me to sell the truck, and get a diesel. You just can't beat forced induction when you're trying to pull in all the air you can at high altitudes when driving steep grades. So if you're not gonna be doing any heavy towing over mountains, then you made a great choice!! But thats just my .02, take it with a grain of salt
Having the non-PI V10, 4" lift and stock gearing and combine that with the high altitude and I can understand the disappointment. Having a 2v PI engine with the proper gearing would make a big difference but it sounds like you're going diesel which will certainly combat the altitude issue.
To the OP sounds like you understand your needs and are buying the right truck for the job. Just remember to take in all the variables and make sure you know were you will be making trade offs.

Yep, very true. But I bought the truck in a hurry and should've waited to get what I really wanted.
I had an '01 and it was a good truck - Never did really mess with tuning it.. ran it 160k without any repairs except a transmission, a fuel pump, brakes and u-joints. Motor had 1 COP issue - that's it...
It's still kicking well - a friend's college aged kid drives it now & still no issues.
