Im not talking about back to back pulling im more talking about out of ditches and such. My buddies ranger was stuck in a HOLE down a hill and i had to pull him out today. I was on asphalt and in 4 wheel low hubs locked in. I felt as if i was being hard on my truck and i was gonna break something in the drive line or differential a few times cause his differential was getting caught on a drainage pipe. I quit pulling as soon as the truck would break traction and tires would spin. Finally we got him out after piling stuff for a ramp. Ive heard of people doing back to back pulls and snapping things in the differential and stuff. My question is how do you properly pull people or things out without breaking stuff or less likely to?
Oh and it was so stuck that we broke a 5/16 tow chain two times and a thick azz tow rope too.
your doing it right, 4 low with the hubs locked in. You just need to know the limits of your truck. If your losing traction in 4low your not going to get him out, try pulling from a different angle, or putting something under the stuck truck for it to ramp up onto.
thats exactly what was done the differential was catching and it happened to be behind a plastic factory and the whole place was outside watching so they gave us pallets to ramp up onto and it came out no problem
here is the pic of the truck stuck before we started to pull it then it came down hole picture by chilldude101 - Photobucket
it doesnt look bad but theres a drainage pipe right in the middle and that was probably a 5 foot drop the truck slid in when he was being dumb offroading
In the multiple attempts to pull We snapped that chain two times and a tow rope. I must agree the chains dangerous and this day coulda been way worse. When the chain broke it smashed in the front of the truck breaking the bug shield the grill and grill mount.

And what damage did the rope do? Can you imagine if that would have went through the guys windshield, you probably could be prosecuted somehow for killing him. If not been found guilty, at least sued for everything you own. Please in the future use a strap or rope.
yeah, chains are no good. I had a chain come through the back window of my old Wrangler while pulling someone out of a mud hole, nearly went through the windshield too.
When the rope snaped it was connected to a long tow strap to a 3/8 inch chain(this one never broke) and the hook from the rop was sent flying and slammed into my bed cover and bent it and the strap flew over the top of my truck and landed on my hood. But i fully understand your concerns towards safety and i will forsure look into getting a extreme duty strap along with recommend them to my other buddys
we were thinking safety though everyone had backed way off just incase
Hang something on the chain. It doesn't half to be real heavy, even a jacket will do. If the chain, cable or rope breaks this will almost always send it down to the ground. When winching I would always hang a blanket on the cable. Doesn't work quite as well on a chain but will help. I have to agree with Justin. Chains can be killers.
When in low range and lose traction try a higher gear. The autos in these trucks will start off in second when selected. May not have worked in this situation but in some you may not break traction as easily.
If you are having a real hard time and can't hold traction or are afraid of breakage go get another vehicle and try towing in tandem.
If you had enough chain you could have tried pulling almost perpendicular to the driver side in an attempt to get it on all 4 wheels. Then pull from the front.
My last suggestion is that you never let your buddy borrow your truck.
See i was in the back corner of the parking lot on asphalt it was rainy so tires were a bit slippery too. We considered other pulling angles but it didnt work cause of lack of traction the only way out was straight up. I never thought of the blanket trick.
and never will i let him borrow..hes driven it on the road thats it. if my grandpa taught me one thing its dont let your friends borrow your truck (for some reason it seems like he knows from experience)

ive got a big tow rope it is kinda like a barge rope. i use it as much as i can. ive pulled out many things and the only thing that i ever broke one on was trying to pull my dads loaded semi grossing 80,000 out after is sunk in the pasture and i also have one chain. it is one from a rail yard that they use to chain the locomotives and cars together.
