Know your limitations. Tow trucks succeed (frequently) because they LIFT and PULL - not just PULL. By picking the stuck vehicle up, you break the friction between the stuck vehicle and the sand/snow/mud in which it's stuck. If a truck is hopelessly stuck, don't sit there and break chains and rip parts off the truck for 4 hours. In some situations, you may have to, but I see people taking incredible risks to DIY when they should call a pro. Spend some time digging, rigging, ramping - whatever - to make the pulling go as it should, and know when to quit!
There is a big difference between towing and recovering a stuck vehicle. With a rolling load, you can get by with a little bit more and not tear stuff up. Snatching a stuck vehicle is where you can really mess stuff up. Sometimes you just can't finesse a 6k truck that has spun all the sand out from under the tires and it's on the frame all the way around. That's where the straps come in. you can "******" the vehicle pretty good, without breaking anything. I'm sure that pulling directly from the receiver would be a little better, but using a good drop hitch turned up with a heavy duty shackle will increase your effectiveness in a lot of cases.
Sorry to hijack, in your pics 2nd one, I was there when the F15s dropped those 2000 lb bombs on that cave in Afghanistan. I was over on the other ramp with the F16s at that time. They dropped 10000 lb on a granite cave and nothing happend to the cave.
Thats awesome i had it as my background and i accidentally uploaded it to my photobucket account from my droid. I loved that picture it just makes me more excited to join the air force after highschool.
Honestly the pull of the truck to get it out wasnt bad at all after we put pallets under the truck so the differential quit catching on the pipe..then it was 4 wheel low and barely any throttle and it came out no problem.
We got a place there called Murdoch's, kinda like a tractor supply. I found 4"x30' "recovery" straps rated at 20,000lbs. I bought 5 of them because they were on sale for $20. Normally $35. I bought them about a week after I broke 3 straps pulling my father in law out of some mud. Good thing I work at a gravel pit about 500' away, I just went up, got the dozer and 300' of 1" cable. Nothing pulls like a D8 crawler.
Found another place. Tow Strap 4" X 30' 23036 America's Farm & Home Store I've never ordered anything from this place, but I have used these straps without breaking them. I haven't "over" used them, but they seem to do well.
