my 84 distributor works fine till it gets wet because the wires feeding it have started loosing the shields and its a big *** headache. it acts like it looses half the cylinders then like you flip a switch they come back then do it again. i want to get a ready to run dizzy like i have in my sbf and just rewire the whole ignition and not worry about any of the old crap under the hood anymore. this is what im looking at but i want to know if i can get a better priced unit that fits my needs. (maybe an older ford one but not points?)
i am also looking at this too but it says without module, does this mean it needs the module or is it for a truck that does not use one? Distributor | AutoZone.com
Summit sells one-wire DUI dizzys for the 300 too. The Mallory would need a CD box anyway, so if the object is going minimalist the DUI would be the way to do it. You'd save $175 on the CD box too.
The Autozone one requires the stock Duraspark module. Look around on-line and there are folks who can rework/recurve a stock dizzy. The only thing I really like about an MSD, etc. dizzy on a lo-po engine is the easy access to the advance springs/bushings if you want to fool around with that. If it's just a case of bad wires replace the pigtail for $10 or get the stock dizzy reworked for half the price of a Mallory.
I just changed the advance springs in my dizzy and it helped a lot. Didn't have time to get out the timing light this past weekend but it was SOTP better. Don't give up on what you've got yet.
Having said that I'm probably gonna end up hooking up the old Jacobs ignition box I've got sitting around. Just because more than anything else.
i did not follow the wires but if i can just get the pigtail (for the truck side) than i would give that a try. also i talked to my parts guy today and he said the same thing you said but one thing we thought about was a 1970 dizzy and get a points conversion kit and run that. i can get the dizzy itself for $35. has anyone used one of the point to electronic conversion's before? baronvonautomatc,do you have the part # for the one wire @ summit racing? and thanks for you help
I did the Pertronix conversion on my '65 Mustang and it worked just fine. I ended up swapping it for an MSD billet dizzy and CD box, though. Again, just for the ease of tweaking the advance curve. That and the fact it's got a pretty nasty cam so it really likes the multiple sparks below 3,000 rpm. In fact, I probably still have the old dizzy sitting around. Not sure if the 300 would need a different Pertronix set-up, if they're the same (and assuming I can find it...) I'd let you have it for next to nothing.
that looks like it would work but i got a new dizzy w/ points today and now i need the pertronix kit to finish it. thanks for the knowledge though. does anyone know if the dizzy in the 1970 300 is the same as a 1984? i just want to make shure the gear has the same amount of teeth and the shaft is the same in size, i thought it would be but the new dizzy has paper work saying to count the teeth and measure the shaft and i dont want to convert it and remove the old one just to find it not the same size.
i have an 81 f100 im in the very slow process of restoring anyhow i just wanted to let you guys know if you need the wiring going into the distributor just buy a distributor pick-up coil there 25 bucks very easy to replace i had to buy one because well my truck was once a work truck and the employees didnt care about this truck so they cut and spliced just about every where there should have been a plug which has lead to all kinds of interesting problems
