Fitting identification help

Any one know what the fitting with a red boot on it, located at 11 o'clock on the top of the front axle (looking down the axle from the driver's side with the wheel off) just behind the rotor is for? Mine is now in two pieces....

Do you have 2wd or 4wd ? On my 4wd, the only fitting on top of the axle on the driver's side is a breather hose for the front diff..

I'll try and get a picture up in the morning

If it a vent hose... just follow it to the end..
Interesting side note... My rear-end starting leaking at the pinion seal a while back.. I found the vent hose to be completely plugged by a dead insect !! Unplugged it and the rear-end stopped leaking..

It is the fitting for the vacuum operated hubs as I recall.

It sounds like you must have manual hubs with the lock/ and unlock position so that is just a boot to keep the crud out.

On trucks with hubs that say auto/ and lock on the hub there will be a vacuum line attached. It actuates the hub when you select 4 wheel drive on the dash.

Feel lucky you don't have that system to maintain they can be some what problematic.

Hope that helps.

I'd take issue with this, and suggest that if you maintain the system, it doesn't become problematic.

I have 202,000 on mine, and the system works like the day it rolled off the line.

The maintenance isn't lengthy, but it's necessary if you don't want the problems.

Sorta' like anything else.....

Not trying to offend But the vac hubs have pages of threads on how to fix their problems.

You would agree that when not maintained they can be "problematic" as we both stated.

I like my manual hub with manual shift. I know if I had the vac hubs I could keep them working but that is one less thing to think about in my case.

Just my .02$

That's fair. I, too, was certainly not trying to offend, just to take issue with what "lucky" is.

Of course I would agree that a neglected system becomes problematic, especially for those who don't understand the operational design.

I just feel fortunate (lucky) to have the ESOF system available to me when I need it, and to not have to get out to manually rotate my hub locks.

Just different approaches.

I agree with Pop. I have 134k on my truck and the ESOF works every time I turn the switch. I also maintain and use the ESOF often to keep it working. There are lots of people that don't even know the system works off of vacuum to lock the hubs.

So it is definitely not a vent line, so I guess the consensus is the vacuum line for the auto 4x4. I have the manual hubs, so although I dont need the vacuum line there, the top of the fitting snapped off, just where the boot ends if anyone else has the same set up. Am I going to be leaking in or out and therefore in need of a new fitting or is it effectively a plug at this point?

Here are a few pictures of the fitting (on the pass side where there still is one) and where it broke off from on the drivers side.

BTW, how do you insert pictures directly into a post?
