Bought my truck Oct. 31 of 2010. Since Day 1, the temp never went above bottom line of "normal". Truck heated up quickly, but would not hold temp at idle or when you let off the accelerator. I kinda thought that the thermostat was bad, but since it warmed up quickly, it had to be working, right? Next thing was I assumed the idiot gauge must be messed up or the sending unit was bad.
Decided to change the thermostat first and then move on to the sending unit before buying an aftermarket gauge. Glad I did. The thermostat fixed it. Temp now runs in the mid "normal" range and the heater, well, I didn't know I had a heater before!
Anyway, Just thought I would share the info since I haven't ever had a thermostat fail like that. Put it in water on the stove and checked it. It was opening at around 140* and closing back down at around 110*.
It would be interesting to know if you get a small increase in MPG running warmer. EOT would be higher and fueling and timing would be different. I'm curious, so let us know if there is a difference. Might be something else to think about if fuel mileage goes down.
I changed the air filter at the same time. It was quite dirty. I did see a 2mpg increase but as bad as the air filter was I would have to accredit the increase to that. It was the first time I had checked the air filter since buying the truck. I've never seen a filter that bad.
The motor not warming up also keeps the PCM from seeing warm enough temperatures to back the timing off from the "cold advance" that it does when the motor is cold. Mine wouldn't warm up much either... my MPG's sucked and the truck wouldn't warm up like it used to. It was noisy and had a lack of power... now it's quiet and spunky again!

Thanks for chiming in with this Jon.
A bad EOT sensor will make the truck run bad as well, or at least not as efficiently.
