spools?

Ok ive asked this question on some other forums and the few who answerd liked them. thought id try to get some more thoughts on them as my binder has a 9 inch thats open and id was thinking of putting a locker or spool in it. I dont do alot of off roading in it. Its gone once and i want to take it at least once a year to do some minor rock crawling with the binder club and i like to play in mud from time to time. its mainly the family camping wagon though.
So what are your thought on spools? do you like lockers better? no idea what year ford the rear is out of. Thanks

if you put a spool in it you will not be able to drive it on the street anymore as the rear wheels will be locked together and the truck will not turn. spools are for drag racing IE going straight

You will still be able to turn with a spool in the rear, but the inside tire will spin at the same speed as the outside tire. It will be noticable but not impossible to handle.

If you only offroad it a couple times a year I would go with a locker, more expensive but more road friendly

A selectable locker is the only thing that makes sense for street use. As the other replies stated, a spool locks your axle permanently, just as welding the spider gears does. This is off-road only and the axle's service days are numbered if you drive on-road with it.

You basically have 3 choices, electric, air or manual. None are cheap, but all are good. Probably electric and manual (a cable actuated like the OX locker) are cheaper and easier to plumb than an air locker. The cool thing is, when you don't have the thing locked, it is basically a stock, open axle with OEM road manners.

Good luck.

There's also the option of a torque-biasing differential which has the road manners of an open diff, the smoothness of a limited slip, and the off-road behavior of a selectable locker that's totally automatic. The Tractech TrueTrac is one; the Zexel TorSen is another; the GM (Eaton, I think) GovLoc is a third. More info on diffs here.

A full locker or spool is just fine for street use. I've had one in my Bronco for almost 10 years and it sees both the street (including snow covered and ice) and trail. The only difference between the Detroit and a spool is that the spool is more predictable since it doesn't lock and unlock. But the Detroits were redesigned a few years ago and are not as harsh.

I have to agree with Steve83, for your use the True Trac is an excellent choice for what you plan to do with your Travelall.
Go IH!!

I say bull crap. I drove on a spooled rear for roughly 1 1/2-2yrs and I live in the midwest (lots of snow) and in town (lots of tight turning). They are no where near as horrible as people make them out to be. They are very predictable and only increase tire wear slightly. I mostly noticed a slight push when turning and some tire barking from the rear. Spools work best w/ really aggressive tires. W/ all-terrians they will make a TON of noise while turning. The large gaps in an aggressive mud tires tread allows it to scoot laterally when turning. This takes some of the stress off the axles and elminates alot of the tire chirping. They aren't foolproof though. If you act stupid w/ one it'll bite you real quick. You'll be facing the opposite direction fast on snow and ice if you don't use your head. I let my wife drive my truck several times w/ the spool and she had no problems w/ it so it's not that bad. Spools are easy to get used to driving on but they are unforgiving of stupidity. Best part is they cost less than 1/2 as much as a locker and a mini spool can be bought for less than $40.

72f100 is right. Spools are not as bad as some people think.

I have one in my 78 4x4 w/33x12.50 tires (not an aggressive tread, either). They chirp like crazy on fresh asphalt, but I can drive in circles for days with them.

Most people that talk bad about spools have never driven one, but heard about them from a friend of a friend of a friend. I heard a lot of BS regarding spools, but for $26 on e-bay, I decided to see for myself.

I love it!

I ordered a spool yesterday, It is much easier to let go of $22 than the hundreds for a locker. I also ordered the stronger pin for an extra $10. For you, though, I think the locker is the way to go, it just makes sense to retain the stock driving characteristics on the highway. Of course, look at me. I'm sure I'll drive my spool all over the place, highway or not!

spools?

Well im still in the looking stages. the only 2 folks ive ever known who had spools one who is gone had an old ******* jeep wagon and p235s tires. The other has a 80s chevy with a big lift and like 40 inch tires. not even close to my set up.
I have a little car that i need to fix so i have something a little more fuel friendly and save my baby for camping and light playing and Sunday cruises. So the spool in my book is still a option. as to the cost that might be the leading factor in the months to come I just wanted to hear from folks who have them how they feel about theirs
Thanks for all your imput

It is a mini spool. The part comes from Richmond Gear, just like the one from Summit, only summit sells it for $39. A little shopping helps sometimes.
