I have an issue with my 90 bronco(5.8 liter fuel injected,e40d).The bronco sat for a year due to tranny problems.I bought a good used e40d from someone and installed it(on the ground, never again). When I went to crank my bronco it had throttle hesitation bad.It idled very rough. When you get it up to 2000 or so rpms it runs smooth but still has a skip. When I put it in reverse it wont even hardly back up,I guess due to it skipping.I could pull the spark plug wires off one at a time and three cylinders had no affect when I pulled the wires off.
i replaced rotor cap and rotor button,no change still hesitant and ships.I pulled the codes and here is what i got, codes 66,91,94,93,99.I looked them up but I dont even know where the best place to start would be except to just start replacing parts.I am a certified mechanic, but any input on anybodies close related problems to this matter would be greatly appreciated.I thought about checking the tps sensor first, any suggestions? Thanks
Code 66 - indicates the TOT (transmission over-temp) sensor was not sending (or receiving) the minimum reference voltage which is approximately +5VDC.
Code 91 - indicates that the circuit for the #1 shift solenoid failed. This is an issue internal to the transmission itself.
Code 93 - isn't even listed in the information I have at my disposal other than to refer the E4OD to a transmission specialist.
Code 94 - indicates the torque converter clutch circuit failed. Again internal to the E4OD.
Code 99 - indicates the pressure control circuit in the E4OD failed.
I would say that either the main wiring harness connection to the transmission has a problem or you got your hands on an E4OD with the internal electronics fried. It is highly unlikely that there are THAT many failed internal components in a transmission unless it suffered some sort of major electronic or thermal breakdown OR it simply isn't properly connected to the EEC-IV computer via the main harness.
Did you check that the tranny you removed and the one now in place matched plugwise? Seems I read a post about the E4OD having a different plugs for some of them. If so, the absolute first thing I would do is undo the plug and clean both it and the pins it mates to. You really gotta' look at and make sure no chunks got in the pin wells. Something in 1 well will stop the whole thing from making proper contact. Use a good contact cleaner and reassemble it with dielectric grease to waterproof it. CRC make a good cleaner if you can find it. We changed my Sons and it did some strange things with shifting. Cleaned the plug and it ran great.
I know what you mean about changin' them beasts on the ground or garage floor. Kind'a makes you use your best swear words don't it.
Just got in from working out of town,Im fixin to go out now and check the plu or connection. That is exactly what my tranny guy said about the plug. Thanks i will let you know the outcome.I hope it is that because the guy I bought it from swore he had no prolems when he pulled it out,but who knows?
Well,I feel stupid.I checked my plug connection on my tranny(e40d) ,took it apart, cleaned it . I crunk up the old bronco and codes still in there,od light still flashing etc.climbed back under it and pulled plug on tranny back apart and come to find out I broke the tab of the connector.Come to find out it would plug in both ways,so I plugged it back in the way it was meant to be and now the bronco has no codes and runs perfect. One wrong plug in and it threw three engine codes and numerous tranny codes.I definately learned a lot on this one, thanks for yalls help here on Ford Truck Enthusiast.I learned alot from this one!!!!!
Glad you found it and it was a simple fix. We've all had a DUH moment where we put something together backwards or out of sequence so don't feel alone. It only becomes an issue if you do it twice to the same thing.
Just to chime in about how much of a beast the E4OD is, I bought a tranny jack from summit racing granted it was only a couple hundred bucks the E4OD ripped the threads right out the the adjustment on the deck of the jack and it almost fell, good thing i had some chains on it. I had it nice and centered on the jack so in my defence it was not user error haha oh and I wouldnt reccomend that jack to to anyone unless your pulling Miata trannys
I'll bet I bought the same thing off of Northern Tool. It was an adapter for transmission work and it did finally work. After we welded the pivots back on and welded it to the jack. To get the tranny out and back in I'll bet we had that Bronco close to 4' off the floor so the whole thing would come out from under it.
On the install my Son finally got pissed and pushed it into place. It was about 10 degrees, we had the wood stove cherry red and we got the garage temp up to a whole 25.
