I use a 650 watt Zerostart tank type heater in my plow truck (350 Chevy V8). I'd use the 1000 watt in your diesel truck, but realize that it may blow a 15 amp circuit breaker in your garage if much else is plugged into that outlet. Mine gets the engine very nicely warm in a few hours - makes for much more enjoyable plowing and easier starts.
Those tank heaters have a check valve that creates a flow of heated coolant through the engine, so they pump (via temperature differential and boiling) water through your heater lines. I have no complaints with mine - just be sure to burp the system and never run the heater dry, or it will fry the element. Also, mount it as low as possible in the engine compartment for best results.
