Im new to this and I need help I have a 2004 f250crewcab 5.4 with 8 inch lift and 37 inch tires and Im not sure what kind of gears do I need. Some people told me that 456, what do you guys think? Thanks for the help. I want a quick acceleration because the 5.4 don't help me. Specially if it's stock.
I would say 4.56 minimum and probably 5.13 I would also look at a sct tuner and tunes from 5 star or the gryphoon from power hungry perfirmance. That should make a night and day difference alone.
Your stock tires were around 32 inches, give or take. I will assume you have the ubiquitous 3.73 gears in your truck now. Damn near everyone does. If not, plug in your own numbers.
Given those numbers, a 4.3128125 gearing is required to return to effective stock gearing. 4.30 would be the closest stock ratio.

factor in the stellar stock performance of the 5.4, the aerodynamic disadvantage and the weight of the lift and tires and you will be unhappy with 4.30's..
4.56 would be the minimum
I just went to a shop to ask them to. and the guy said that he recommends me the 4.88. And he gave me a price of $1480 it's that a fair price? I still need to go check around other shops but it's between the 4.88 and 5.13. I really don't drive this truck often just on the weekends. So not really concerned about mpg.
Well we both know the 5.4 is an extremely reliable engine that can take RPMs. Years ago a friend of mine had a 97 Ram 360v8 with 37" tires and the 5.13 gears. It moved out nice and it still could go down the highway. However with better torque and more usable RPMs I'd probably be moderate with the 4.88s myself. Granted his was a Dodge, but he broke drive train and suspension parts all the time.
