Ok, so this is the 2nd time I've had GEM issues. Last year it seemed as if I was having GEM problems, so I siliconed every hole in the firewall I could find and apparently that did the trick.
Now a couple of days ago when I turned the truck off the heater blower motor would stay on. Then the horn starting honking at about 930 at night (solid long honk til I pulled the fuse). So again I re-siliconed all the firewall holes I could find, pulled the GEM, couldn't see any signs of water on the fuse panel or GEM, but opened it and let it air out anyway, then wrapped the crap out of it with duct tape. Worked good for a couple of days but then last night the blower motor did the same thing again. I went ahead and pulled the horn fuse just in case and then today while driving I hear a beeping coming from below the dash from approximately where the GEM is. 5 beeps at about 1 second intervals then pause and the 5 beeps again. It did this 4 or 5 times and then quit.
I'm gonna silicone around the windshield for safety sake, but what i can't figure out is why this is happening. Never see any water under the dash when I look, and other that that the truck does great. Thoughts?
Did the beeping happen soon after you started the truck? I had the same thing happen with the Blower and the horn, also my windshield wipers quit working. Replaced the GEM and all is well
I happened not long after I started it, but it's also done it while driving well after I started it. Where did you get your new GEM and what was the cost? Also, did you reseal your windshield or anything like that? Was yours just dying or did it get wet somehow?
Well I took the truck through what I thought was 18" of water ended up being 30", water came through the firewall by the clutch pedal and got the GEM wet. I think that the beeping you are referring to is due to the Light for the airbag on the dash being burned out. The new GEM came from www.partsguyed.com
And I think it was like 260?!? Ed, the guy that runs the website has had some medical trouble and he is a long time member on here. There is someone watching the website so if your order should take longer than usual it is not because they don't want to help you
The beeping is from the airbag light being burnt out. The beeping will be in 5 groups of 5. If you turn your key to on, do you see the airbag light? It is basically telling you there is a problem and the light cannot warn you about it.
Ken,
So if I replace the airbag light should the beeping stop?
Rob,
Did Ed have to program the GEM for your particular truck? I knew he was having some medical stuff going on and last thing I read said he was finally home recovering.
Man that's crazy about the 30" of water. Glad everything turned out ok though. Hopefully my GEM will continue to work. I'm going to silicone around the windshield tonight and pull the cover up that under the windshield wipers to see if there's any leaks coming from there.
I checked the airbag light and apparently I hadn't plugged the cable back into the back all the way when I changed out an instrument panel light. Anyhow. I pulled the valance off the drivers side and put silicone around the windshield edge. I checked all around under the dash and could see no signs of any water, yet the blower motor stays on with no key in the ignition. How often do GEMS just go bad? I opened it the other day and didn't see any signs of wetness or damaged or burnt electronics. Thoughts?
Beeps are back again. Just put a new turbo in the truck today after being broke down in Canada for 12 days. Was backing the truck up tonight and it starting the 5 beeps again. Is the light that burns out the one in the instrument cluster or the one on the airbag switch itself?
same issue, bud....thread titled 5 sets of 5 beeps.
Installed new light (led), guess it needed a resistor (470ohm), and it burnt out, however, the beeping stop. i wasnt happy with light being out, so tried another led with resistor, this time, light didnt work, but beepings back. Just yesterday, installed a 12v led, and same thing, no light and beeping still. Think, i somehow screwed up the circuit board with the soldering gun. I cant see spending 75 buks +, on a new one. Think i'll turn up the radio.
My GEM, at the time, with blower going, gauge lights on..etc, with truck off, found a few links about GEM getting wet (had rained for few days), so, i took the cowl off, and driver side trim window mould off, and siliconed the crap outta it, after let cure, washed the ride, and i mean, let hose on that spot for a good 10minutes, and whamo, no water at all.
but so far so good...also, dont know if you saw my thread about same thing, but just installed the 12v lead, had it soldered wrong way, but flipped it, and presto, works perfect now, and no beeping goin on.
Did you get a new GEM??? Some will tell you that you have to have it programmed however if you give ED your VIN number he will send you a unit that is compatible with your truck. I Didn't have to reprogram the GEM.
