Broken cap, secondary fuel filter

Ok gents, heres the delema. I did the fuel filter replacement and the primary filter chang and HCFM went with out a hitch. Went to change the secondary filter (engine mount) and had a problem with the cap. The cap on the last filter change must have been put on to tight. I bought a replacement cap at IH ($15.00).
The 15/16ths socket rounded the edges of the nut, and the 1/2 inch drive cracked the side of the plastic nut. There are no leakes from the cap. Any recomendations or experience with removing the cap in this condition.

I've read here where they've been removed with a hammer and chisel by tapping counter - clockwise on the edge of the cap.

I used a flat head screw driver and a hammer to tap on the edge at an angle to get mine loose. Worked pretty good. I was going to tell you to never use that square drive to get the cap off as it will break there, but it sounds like you already knew that you should always use a socket.

Thanks Guys, Yes when I saw it started to crack Saturday i knew I would have to replace it. Ford wanted $60.00. IH wanted $15.00. What a mark up. I like the Idea of using the chisel or the screw driver and hammer. I will give that a try.

If worse came to worse you could use a chisel and break it into pieces.

I had same thing happen to me when I first chged my filters in 2003, I used a modified oil filter wrench.

Now, I put it on hand tight, and no leaks when I do it.

Hope all works out for you.

Yeah, after the cap seated, I gave it just a 1/8 turn with the ratchet. The cap says 14Nm, I think thats too much. I checked and there were no leaks. All's well.

Use a 24 mm socket and you won't have this problem again unless you over torque it. The O ring does the sealing not the threads.

Tried everything........
Stripped it, broke it with the socket, screwdrivered it, chiseled it.
Now with just really the threaded part in the housing, what would you recommend? It never budged and I am almost sure at 130K someone(Ford) has never seen the inside of this filer housing.

What to do now?

Use a 24mm 6 point socket. 12 point is more likely to round of the plastic edges.

Are you saying that the threaded portion is STILL on the housing? I'd remove the filter and fluid left and still a big soft rag in the hole and use a small screwdriver and break up one side of the threaded plastic. Once one section is broken you SHOULD be able to just lift out the rest. Clean up the pieces (vacuum) and install new filter and cap.

Hope no one GLUED in the threads!
