disconnecting ammeter

I'm installing a 100amp 1wire alternator in my '68 F100 and since the original meter doesn't seem to be working, it jumps a little when you turn something on but never really moves, I wanted to disconnect it. I am afraid of leaving it hooked up since I've heard a lot of stories about these meters causing fires when they go. So, can I just unhook the wires and terminate them or do they have to be rerouted to something else?

If it it the stock ammeter, don't worry about it. The aftermarket ones have the full current going thru them. The stock one does not.

Yup, it's the stock meter. Thanks for the reply. By the way I think you're the one that sent me a PM on installing my one wire alternator; if you are, thanks a lot it made it really easy.
