I'm looking at a '99 f-350 crew cab XLT 7.3L with the 6 speed. It has 200,000 miles. The trany, clutch, and injectors are new. I've never owned a diesel and would like to know if this would be a good truck. I don't pull anything bigger than a 8x8 trailor so it will be overkill i know. What is the avg. life out of these motors I have heard from a mechanic friend not to get the 6.0. Any info would be nice. And also would this truck be worth $9500 with this many miles?
I would probably offer more like $8K with that many miles. But so long as the truck has been maintained, you will get a lot of miles out of it.
My truck is an early 99 with 250K miles on it and I just now replaced the tranny after many miles and years of hauling and being a daily driver. The engine still runs great. The most I have done is replace the glow plugs and the GP relay and alternator.
Switch the oil over to 5w40 synthetic for easier cold starts.
Check the VIN at a dealer to make sure that the CPS and the cruise recall have been done.
Pull the hard plastic portion of the intake off so you can see the turbo and make sure it isn't dusted or damaged worse. Only takes a flat screw driver to remove a couple of clamps.
Check the rear leaf springs for cracks or breakage.
Check all brake pad and rotors. Make sure there isn't any uneven wear or excessive wear on the rotors
I am sure others will reply but I have seen many with 500K+ miles on their 7.3 PSD trucks
