Hello all, this is my first post. I have spent many valuable hours reading other posts; this site is the best!
I'm looking for a good integrated GPS/CD/AM/FM unit that fits into the Ford factory (double-din?) dash. I use GPS extensively, and right now I have the "on top the dash" mount Garmin StreetPilot, which is OK, but I really want one integrated. I think with 2003 the Expedition Eddie Bauer has it as an option, but I can't find anything about getting one for my F350.
I've looked at quite a few aftermarket units, such as Alpine and Pioneer, but they all have the slide-out screens which I don't like to much, and they all seem to be single-din only.
Kenwood has a really good one, it is the one that I use, it is double din, touchscreen, has xm navtraffic(which is really helpful), but you do have to get xm to get it, although most kenwood units allow for both, but if you use xm, it still says sirius, but you will be able to control both, I do. Plus you can retain use of your factory steering wheel redundant controls for your radio. They don't sell the exact unit that I use, they did upgrade the model and style of the new radios, but mine is the exceleron version of the DDX. Plus you will get ability to play mp3 cds and even dvd's(if you were so inclined).
2x on Kenwood. I put one in my 2005; it works great and is easy to use. I got the xm option, but not traffic. It also allows the use of bluetooth phones, DVD, Ipod if you get an adapter, and will play DVDs in a second zone in the back seat--maybe I'll get seat back monitors before my next long trip with the kids.
It's good to see that you finally decided to jump in and post!
If you want a simpler to operate, less buttons, OEM look, reasonably priced unit, with all the features of most others. Take a look at the Pioneer AVIC-D3

It will play on the radio screen as well, you don't have to have just the rear monitors(not that I do watch on the screen, but you can). Instead of the ipod, I had hooked up a music keg, in my opinion as far as vehicle use, the keg is better then the ipod at this point, the ipod will surpass it, but I just like the audio features of the keg more then the ipod.

True, but not while driving unless you override the system or put on the emergency brake as you drive down the road. The picture is actually quite good. And the install looks factory.
The Ford Dealership I bought my truck at was handing out literature on the Eclipse systems. I haven't sprung for one on my truck yet, but a friend of mine has it in his truck and the map detail is incredible. I go wheelin all the time and his Eclipse unit (with the original cd) shows all the little 4x4 and motocycle trails. It is pretty nice and easy to use. Looks like it could be stock as well.
I am finding out that the Ford SD dash slot is in fact "not quite" a double din hole and all the newer/larger units that are double, will NOT fit the Ford dash.
An example is the AVIC-D3
if you go to crutchfield and enter your Ford truck into the fit my car info and then do a search on AVIC-D3 it comes back with won't fit flags. I called Crutchfield on these since I'd just talked to a local stereo shop on another unit and they talked like it was a normal but Crutch was showing it wont fit.
They said cause they only show what will fit with no custom trimming etc. and the local corroberated that with the fact that they put units in Ford F's that routinely need trimming to make the double din measurements.
The '99-'04's require a little trimming around the edge of the opening (with a little care and sanding, the cut's invisible) and on the stock mount to fit a Double-Din. The '05-'07's will fit a DD just fine. Do a search in this forum or the A/V forum, I think someone has pics of a '99-'04 install.

Thanks much EnviroCon for the more directed update. Helps alot. Appreciate.

+1 on the Avic D3. My buddy has a very busy stereo and custom shop here in town and he sells 4 D3s to every N or Z series. I found them on ebay, brand new for $600 shipped. Ordered one for my 05 along with the steering wheel control adapter and IP Bus adapter.
I plan on upgrading to an aftermarket GPS when my SD comes in as well. I don't think the factory unit is worth the $2K and know I can get a better non-oem unit, that the passenger can program while the car is in motion.
On another note, I recently acquired a new phone that has a GPS unit on it and it's amazing. A Blackberry 8800 w/Cingular. It's probably one of the best systems I have ever used and it's on my mobile phone, so when I travel, I always have a portable GPS on me.
And I think the cost is about $10/month for unlimited navagation. http://www.blackberry8800series.com/
I know it's not exactly what your looking for, but thought I would mention it anyway. The phone costs about $500 and it has the nav integrated, you also get email, etc.
Can I get a clarification here? If I swap out my OEM radio for a "fancier" one, will I still be able to use my steering wheel radio controls? Also, does the "next" button work better and jump from pre-set to pre-set or does it do the same old "seek" function? Thanks!
You will have to purchase a steering wheel interface module, most of us get the unit from PAC. And depending on your radio you can then teach the controls to do whatever you want. For example there was no simple switch between inputs on my Kenwood unit so I made the Mode button work as a seek back/track back button and the next work as a seek forward/track forward button. I wouldn't think you would have a problem getting an aftermarket stereo to skip through presets if you programmed it that way, assuming the head unit has that function built into it, a lot of them don't.
