stuipd idea?

I am working on my trailer a bit this weekend. It's the back end of my 97. I havent cut it off yet but it's close. I'm making the tongue for it now and working on a wiring harness to connect it to my 94.
My goal is to paint it to match, put the same lift blocks and tires on it, same wheels and everything. Then when we travel with the camper I can carry my 100 gallon fuel tank, tool box, 4 mounted mud tires and whatever else.

What I was thinking that may be stupid, is putting two quick connect fuel lines on the back of my truck and the front of the trailer and using the two tanks under the trailer too. With the original diverter valve and the tank switch out of the 97. Then I'll have 4 20 gallon or whatever fully operational truck tanks and 100 gallons more in the bed of the trailer. That should get me pretty much anywhere I think. What do you all think? Stupid idea or no? Any ideas how to rg the plumbing if it sounds like a good one?

That sounds like an interesting idea, Ranch, and an even more interesting fuel pump bill. I think that step number one would be to find out if there are any regulations regarding a non-static fuel supply on a towed trailer. If I'm reading right what you are wanting to do, you want to be able to draw from the tanks on the trailer while in motion? I'd check with DOT first before attempting anything like that. Additionally, with all tanks full (4 20 gal tanks and 100 gal tank) you would have to placard your truck for hazardous material, as you would have more than the aggregate 1,001 pounds.

I'd mount air and fresh water tank in place of the factory tanks. Can't ever have to much water and never know when you might need air.

They make quick connect fittings for vacuum lines on vac over hydraulic trailer brakes idk if that is what u r looking for but im sure u could use them somehow for your application. I would connect the two fuel tanks on the trailer drill holes in the bottom of the tanks and put hose between them so u wont have to switch tanks or whatever and just switch thas switchover valve to the front tank before u cut the wires going to it and u can pull fuel from the trailer through your fuel lines (:

Ya, better check with dot. I like the idea, but I dont think they will want fuel transferring from a trailer to a pickup while in motion, but I've been wrong before...

Awww Poo on DOT.. LOL!

I like the idea! I am always looking to get extra fuel carrying capabilities out of mine as well. I have been playing around with the idea of mounting extra fuel tanks on the roof of my horse trailer, on top of the extra tanks already on the truck!

I may not be Mr. safety, but I don't think it's a good idea. Interesting for sure. I'm with Jeff on this one. Air and Water would be a better choice.

not sure how you dot laws are but id say it wont fly, in MO you have to take all tanks out and whave an open diff on a homeade pick up trailor, i would stick with 100 gallon tank and all, sounded good, but could save you in some fine's down the road

haha. That's why I like the camper so much. It's got a bathroom! I'm a coffeeholic and can't go 50 miles sometimes without a pit stop.

I have been asking around about DOT laws and finaly called an officer. To the best of his knowledge I'll be legal because of the farm tags. I can carry whatever I want pretty much up to 38000 pounds. For farm use of course. yeah. I know several of my neighbors have 1000 gallon tanks on wheels that they haul to the distributor and fill up. I hate those things. Front turn axles on a trailer are scary.

I may just put air tanks in there though. I got a couple perfect candidates for that project. great idea and I can sure use it on the beach. I hate airing down then having to drive 30 miles to the nearest free air compressor. I just refuse to pay for air. And those little POS emergency compressors suck on big tires. I have a little one on the truck for air bags but it'll burn out too doing tires.
