What type of diesel? The Fords came from the factory with a international diesel. Not in a Bronco, but it has been done before. A Cummins 4bt would be a fairly straightforward swap, and it has been done also.

Let us know what diesels you have in your area, 6.9/7.3L may not be there, but you may have Cummins, Perkins, Yanmar, or others. Anything can be done, but some will be cheaper than others.

Personnally I would go with the Cummins if you can find one. There is alot of support out there for a cummins swap into our body style.

Thanks to all those who have replied. I was looking at going for a cummins 6.0 or the 7.3 ltr. I was thinking about importing one from the states as is is a good exchange rate at the momment. It is going in to get the rust done in two weeks. Lucky as there is not to much. I would be looking at a gearbox as well or can you get adapter plates for the AOD. I am only new at this bloging stuff so please bare with me. Cheers Glenn

The AOD is not a big enough tranny behind a diesel. That's one of the main problems with the Ford diesel's-crappy tranny choices. Your diesel tranny choices if you get a Ford idi will be;
The c6 automatic-very good tranny, holds up well, but no overdrive and has a somewhat "loose" torque convertor which does not use all the low rpm torque this engine has.

The t19 manual 4 speed-also a very good tranny, unbreakable, but no overdrive like the c6.

The zf 5 speed-good tranny but is aluminum and is noisy unless you use the very expensive factory dual mass flywheel. It does give you overdrive though.

The E4OD-Lousy automatic with overdrive unless it's rebuilt with upgraded 95-up parts. It also requires a stand alone computer to run it. Ford had a stand alone computer system in the old idi's to run this tranny, and you can also buy other systems from the aftermarket.

Hi Dave. Mate you seem to know alot about this. Thanks heeps for all the info. What about some of the newer tranies on the 03 to current models. They should bolt staight up to the cummins. A few mods to the mountings. If only it was that easy. I have made a few phoine calls about the converstion out here and evreybody uses the 6.5ltr chev engine. they want 20k aussie for it. I think that the cummins is a better engine. Any other info would be greatly apreciated.

cheers, Glenn

Most all later trannies that are automatic need a computer to run them. I have heard Dodge is now the only company that offers a manual tranny in their trucks.

If you are doing a cummins swap, I would try and get the manual tranny that went with it. I am not too familiar with this tranny, but I believe it's supposed to be good, I think it's a New Venture 5 speed. None of the older Dodge automatics behind the cummins seem to have a good reputation.

The Dodge trucks in the last 10 years have used 3 different transmissions (manuals) One was in the early years and is the 5 speed NV4500. Not bad, but only a 5 speed. Second is the Getrag G56, it is a 6 speed and is not bad, currently in use. Last is the NV5600, I had one in my 03 with the Cummins and it is rock solid. My NV5600 had a granny low that I never used unless I planned to drag a house down the road, I always started in second gear.
All 3 of these are great choices and will bolt up to a Cummins B series engine out of a Dodge truck and require no computers and all are available in 2wd and 4wd versions.
