I have a 1988 eb bronco (5.8) with the 3 speed non-OD automatic I think its ready to go after about 179,000 miles on it and I was wondering if I could put an E40D in there? would I have to change the computer as well? and before I do this I would like to trouble-shoot it first. when I floor it it takes forever to get to 55 MPH because it feels like it slipping, the tranny fluid is just right what that hell is the problem?
I have the same year truck with the same tranny. I haven't noticed the same problem that you have. You might try checking your catalytic converter. Make sure it isn't clogged. It will cause a serious no power problem if it's clogged. I have over 200,000 on my c-6. Any power problems I have had have been caused by engine or fuel malfunctions. Check it out and let me know how it goes.
Thanks for the tips, I have 179,000 on mine and a rebuilt engine with 40,000 on it, this was originaly a california vehicle with the smog pumps and @#$%, it even has 2 yes 2 catalytic converters lol I better get rid of 1 cause in pa they only require 1 and maybe even buy a new one! I really would like to get that E4OD tranny if its possible!
I've heard that some people have problems with that tranny. i know that the c-6 is a stonger tranny if you pull lots of wiehgt/loads. But the e4od would give you better gas milage. My next tranny is going to be a ZF manual tranny with an overdrive and a synchronized granny low. Lots of luck to you.
I'm going to get it out of an f250 from a junk yard. I found one with the clutch, master cylinder, bell house, and everything for about $800. I just don't have the money to buy it yet.
Hey red, you can get that c-6 rebuilt for next to nothing and easily get another 170k out of her. If you looking for the overdrive, an AOD would be alot cheaper and you wouldnt need to upgrade the computer. Ive heard of e4od's costing around 2-3k to have rebuilt. An AOD would only run you about 1400 for a stout hard running rebuild. Alot of people like the e4od but they havent had to rebuild them yet, plus there electronicly controled which personaly doesnt sit well with me. but it all comes down to what you are willing to pay for. Go to www.mybigbronco.com and do a search in the technical area of the forums. you will find a lot of info comparing the Aod to E4od
I'm with the last guy concerning the E4OD. I've heard of a few people swapping the much-stronger C6 for the AOD or E4OD, but never the otherway around. I've also heard of a few suggestions to swap the guts in your C6 with those from a newer 4RW100( I think that's the no.), or a complete overhaul is about $600. I think if the tranny was slipping that badly, the fluid would be burnt somewhat. A clogged cat.conv. sounds right, too. If you do decide you want the OD option, you would need the kickdown cable and linkages which are different from your C6.
