This is for anybody who lives up north or maybe a hunter type - How do I keep my hands and feet warm when I have to stand still for hours outside, like at 15 degrees? I can keep my body warm, but the hands and feet go numb fast. I am ok working but standing is bad. I think NJ is going into an ice age.
I can't. That's the problem. Sometimes I have to stand still. Usually 2-3 hours at a time. I would think hunters do that, although I don't hunt so I am only guessing.
Do you have to wear a uniform with a certain kind of boots? If not,I highly recommend la cross alpha burly 1500 gram thinsulate boots. I have a pair of these,I don't even wear heavy socks with them, and have been comfortable down to 0 degrees, and wasn't even starting to get cold. as far as gloves/mittens just go to an outdoor store and buy the best heavy pair they have and you will be good to go.
Battery opperated socks & gloves, dress in layers. Hotshots as mentioned....
I bought a pair of the gloves once. I think I paid about 35 dollars and they barely got warm and that was only for fifteen minutes. Is there a good brand that works? And a good brand of socks that work? If I could fix the hands and feet I could even ride my motorcycle when there isn't any ice or snow.
They sell craploads of hand and foot warmers at any given lowes or home depot. The friction-activated pads that stick to, say....the sock (toastie toes)......pressure activates the metallic powder in the pad.......They last for 6 to 8 hrs inside the boot.....Keep you warm in a tree stand. When they're done, unstick them and toss. I don't know....coupla bucks a pair. They're not HEATERS per se.....I think they get to right around 100 degrees.....just a bit above body temperature.....but they'll keep the hands and feet from dropping in temp.

I will try Home Depot tomorrow. I remember seeing them in buckets there.

What are you a state employee? (just kidding - I am one myself)
I use (and swear by) Hot Hands. I buy them by the carton at the wholesale club and they end up costing about 1/2 or less what you'd pay buying the individual pairs.
I have to work outside a lot and using various measuring/surveying tools with gloves and writing in a field book is next to impossible with gloves. I keep a par of the hot hands in my pockets and they usually last for the entire shift. I try to schedule as much work in the tunnels as I can this time of year to avoid the cold.
What do you do that you have to stand so still for so long?
I'll go to Home Depot tomorrow and read the directions this time on those little packs. If that doesn't do it I will try the boots.
Thanks for all the replies.
