Need info
Can anyone tell me what year the 5.4 became a 3 valve motor? I'm looking at buying an '04 and just wonder if it's a 2nd 3 valve motor.

The three valve 5.4 and 6.8 came out in the 2005 model Super Duty. It was also the debut year for the TorqShift transmission behind the gas engines.

05 in the super duty. Earlier in the f150 i rekon!

Yeah, my bad. I assumed since he posted it in the SD forum, he meant what year in the SD. But.....you know what they say about assuming.

The 3v is a better motor. The biggest problem with them is from 05 to 07, I believe. They are the one's that have problems with the spark plugs breaking off when trying to remove them. I think the problem was fixed in 08. Good luck.
