I have always disliked how the Aerostars do not indicate whether the cruise control is functioning or not. If anyone here has access to the wiring diagrams, there must be a way to add a light that will indicate whether the cruise control is active or not.
The vehicle I would be doing this on will be a 1997 4.0L Aerostar. It has working cruise control.
When you push the on button that sends power to the cruise module that latches something inside it. That would be the place to grab a source for a light..You would have to get in there with a test light and see what stays hot with the on button..
As long as its the same as my 96's
I have an original 94 Ford Aerostar Electrical and vacuum troubleshooting manual here. I realize that the 97 version may indeed be different than what I am looking at.
The On button on the steering wheel first goes thought the Clockspring Assembly.
By the way, the clockspring is actually called that in this official Ford publication, contrary to some claims that Ford never called it that.
After leaving the clockspring, it enters a "speed control module". The speed control module shows up as a Solid State module. There are various connections to this module, brake, speed input, servo position feed, servo position ground, servo position signal, ign, vac solenoid control, solenoid voltage source, vent solenoid control and ground. The signal I would check out would be the Solenoid voltage source, pin 5 and is an O/Y wire.
I can scan the schematics and email if that would be helpfull.
Ok, I plan to replace the useless AMP light with a cruise indicator. I will need to work on the blacked out transparency. I have sources for that bit. I'll let you know how it goes.
Ok looked it up...Looks like pin 5 on the speed control amp in right kicker. Or pin 1 on the servo under the hood. O/Y wire should go to 12v with on pushed as far as I can tell.
Now thats on my 96 remember.
