3,500 miles to fish creek Alaska. To do the trail that they did on Top Gear.
175 gallons up another 175 gallons back (at 20 mpg)
at 3 dollar a gallon-- $1050 in fuel
Its 48 hours (nonstop) up and another 48 back-- so I am figuring it's at least a 2 week trip-- (4 days up, 4 days there and 4 days back)
At $20 a day for food-- $500 -- $200 for camping fees and another couple hundred incadentals--
So around $2000--
SO Who would even dream of going in maybe 2 years? (2013)
you get 20, I get 9 miles per gallon, 5 sets of tires, broken parts, clutch, U joints.
I would guess closer to $4,000 all said and done.
And as much fun as it sounds, that's a little out of my comfort zone for driving a vehicle, just yet, but I won't say its not completely out. Just put me on the maybe list for now.

Just wondering.
Is that the one i just watched Sat where they had the Ford,Chevy and Dodge ? If so the Ford would have won if the guy knew how to drive over rocks and not have a heavy foot on the gas pedal.
Ya T, it is, all of them would have made it there just fine and likely back if the guys had a clue about how to drive offroad. But, its made for TV, if all of them, or two of them would have made it, then they wouldn't have their pre scripted TV show. It was decided before they left which one was going to make it. (probably paid for by Chevy) They didn't ever go over as tough of obstacles as we do out at Tuttle on a regular basis, and we all know Rutleg's character is set to destroy they gave him a truck and said "Go Destroy it", one way or the other anything he drives ends up that way, the Jersey guy.. well came from a big city, what the heck does he know about going offroad? Those guys just don't have the chemistry, or Character or humor of the BBC Top gear. The show is just to dry. I don't imagine it will last long. (I could be wrong)
However I did kind of enjoy this particular episode.
My guess would have been that the first one to die would have been the chevy because it was by far the lightest duty truck out there. I'm still wondering about what really went wrong with the Dodge (if anything) or if they just made some steam come out of the grill for effect. The F250 seemed to plow through the terrain with ease.
I gotta say though, that Dodge was a pretty nice rig! I'd buy it for 3k in a heartbeat
Biggest problem with the f250 its a 3/4 ton truck, and while it is good and heavy, for offroading good and heavy beats you up, and the truck. The springs didn't give like they would on a 1/2 ton, so it bounced, therefore breaking the u joints.
Rutleg was driving through the water like an idiot, he probably made the engine gulp a bunch of water, which was likely the first problem, that and he had that building in the back of it catching air like crazy, probably driving down the interstate at highway speeds in overdrive overheating the tranny with oversized tires.
Thomas did you just break a driveshaft too? Those guys where having fun-- they didn't pay for the truck so the stunts they did were for show. It looks like allot of fun and some great trail riding to me.

That was going to be my first guess for failure, that was the biggest reason we didn't even look at those when we were truck shopping. Trannies go boom
Yes i made my Ds slightly curved i was just saying if the ds wouldn't have broke the Ford would have won or at least made it there. And yes doing that trail would be fun to do.
All three guys had about the same driving technique, so........ it really should boil down to who had a better vehicle. Hard to beat the reliability of a Chevy
Seriously though, I really want to visit Alaska someday. It just looks beautiful. That looks like alot of fun.
